VOIP mobile calling can be cheaper than landline to mobile or mobile to mobile.

The range of rates in that link looks pretty ordinary. Anyone with free mobile mins will want to use these up first, and anyone making a lot of of calls to mobiles may also be better served with a monthly minutes package from their mobile provider.

Gigaset VOIP phones can fall back to landlines if the VOIP/internet is down. I use a Gigaset N300A IP base station with a S810H handset. It takes some setting up to get it working because the VOIP calls need to specify 0044 before UK calls but once done it all works very well. The settings do allow that for VOIP calls so that the phone book, 500 entries, are listed normally. Then if you want to, you can have the phone ask where you want the call directed to when you make a call or it can automatically go to one service and fallback to a landline if necessary. I have it ask me before each call whether I want to use VOIP or BT, because some rare calls are cheaper via BT. Emergency and 0800 need to go via BT really.

However, I still haven't got the SMS texts working via the phone to the VOIP account, a service centre number is required to be entered and I don't know what to use. The VOIP does support SMS but gives no details about how to do it. The PC software works but not SMS via the Gigaset phone. Not yet anyway.

Gigaset VOIP phones do have their own VOIP service called Gigaset.net but it only works for calls between Gigaset.net users and not to landlines. It's like the free VOIP PC to PC services.

Thanks for this info. I have been looking at buying a VOIP compatible DECT base, the gigaset in particular. A question for you or anyone else here that may know:

The gigaset N300 base station is listed as compatible with the C300H 'additional handset'. These are about £30 each. All well and good. However you can buy a twin pack of C300A's with own base for only £45. I have looked at the specs and data, they appear to be compatible with the N300 base as they have HSP tech. But they are not listed on the look up table. I suspect this is because they would rather someone buys a handset without a base. Can anyone confirm that normal 'A'- not additional 'H' handsets DO also work with a N300 VOIP base please>?

    Many thanks in advance

Hello excuse the PM but there is not much VOIP discussion on the internet. I have been looking at buying a VOIP compatible DECT base, the gigaset in particular. Would you be able to answer me this? (also posted on thread):

Sorry about the late reply but I missed the PM until now.

I do not know for certain is the simple answer because I don't use that handset or base station, I have the N300A with a S810 handset and I have tried an old Panasonic DECT phone with the N300A and it worked partly.

The C300A Duo has a base station with a POTS connection so you would need two connections to the POTS, the C300A Duo and the N300. The handsets can be registered with different base stations so one could be used with the N300. You would also need one for the C300A base station to use the answerphone and the possible confusion that might create. You couldn't have the handsets registered with both base stations at the same time.

In theory, it might work however I cannot say for certain so don't say it doesn't if you try it.

The N300A is more a total solution IMO.

BTW Your PM inbox is full so I could not reply to your PM.

Thanks for this info. I've deleted some messages now! I've put this idea on ice as I've managed to get my smartphone doing VOIP quite well with a SIP app, so this will do me ok for now

    For Information
Just got Nexus 4 and found it has inbuilt VOIP, so connected to my Sipgate account and it works just fine - no need for external app.

I mention this as nowhere in any reviews or spec is this facility mentioned.

Has anyone heard of this company or have any comments on them?

    https://www.freevoipdeal.com

I receive an email from them and can't decide if it is spam or not. I am registered with about 3 Voip companies and this one looks cheap, but I'm sure there must be a catch.

Another Betamax/Dellmont brand. To clarify. Betamax is now: Dellmont. They changed company names a few years ago.

I've used a few of their brands over the past few years.
    - VoIPstunt
    - VoIPcheap
    - webcalldirect.

From understanding there are over 40 betamax/DELLMONT brands.

A service i have recently been testing is Aloha Connect. (http://aloha-connect.com).

    So far so good.

They charge 0.4p/min to the UK and USA.

They appear to be a calling card/voip company.

To get setup for VoIP was a bit of a faf as you had to email them to clarify you were fully aware you could not call 999. After doing this they set me up fairly quickly and my Siemens Gigaset phone connected straight away. Fair play the quality was good. Also I purchased a Local area code number and it was setup to ring my voip phone instantly and was easy to configure.

I've checked there rates to other places as well and they seem really competitive.

I know betamax products usually give you 'free minutes' etc.. But usually you hit their fair usage policy or your credit goes walkies.

Also they provide you a phone number for support.. for me... thats much much better than betamax email support.

I'll test them out more and let you guys know.

They offer an 0800 number for access with a standard landline, but no alternative UK geo number for using with inclusive mobile minutes, correct? Also no apps for smartphone access via WiFi?

    Sipgate.co.uk

Do I have access to emergency services by dialling 999?

Emergency services will only work if your emergency address is within UK.

In order to be able to contact the emergency services from your sipgate account, you need to have to configured and activated your emergency location. Please be sure to submit your correct and valid UK address as foreign addresses are not accepted.

By failing to do this, making an emergency call is not possible and could put you and your loved ones in jeopardy should an emergency occur.

Sipgate will verify and validate your UK emergency address. This process can take a few days and you will receive an email confirming that the emergency call service has been activated if your emergency location has been validated by the EHA. You can always check the emergency status on the sipgate website in your settings area.
