Can anyone point me in the direction of any providers of online numbers and costs? I'd like a number with my local area code that people can ring me on. I looked on the skype website but they don't give any prices unless you log in and download their software and I don't want to do this.
I am just using a headset to make calls over voipcheap at the moment, but I was just wondering if I could get a number that people can call me on.Indecision is the key to flexibility0 -
You can purchase an incoming geographical UK number from soho66 https://soho66.co.uk/order/packagewizard.aspx for £2 per month + VAT but their outgoing call costs may/may not compete with Voipcheap. I think "Skype In" is only economical on the half price offer that you get by purchasing an all-you-can eat monthly tariff either by country or for world.0

take a look at 12voip0 -
No mention of incoming numbers offered on 12voip's front page. Looks like you have to create an account and log in just to see what numbers and pricing they have.0

I'm 99% sure (but I can't find the info on the website) that 12voip is part of the same company as voip cheap. The phrasing and ways of explaining things are identical. Voipcheap offered me an incoming number, but it wasn't a normal number. It started 056 and that's not a normal number! (I think 5p per minute from tiscali landline)
soho66 looks good - thanks for that.
I'm also looking at getting a phone adaptor to use a cordless phone via voip. I look on ebay and lots of products are listed that say they are skype compatible. Does this mean that it won't work with other voip providers? Or will I just need to configure the settings?
example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRUST-USB-Internet-Phone-Station-VOIP-Skype-Adapter_W0QQitemZ360297900369QQihZ023QQcategoryZ61841QQcmdZViewItem
I'm guessing if I continue to use headphones then I could possibly use voipcheap for outgoing calls and soho66 for incoming calls, but that wouldn't be possible with a cordless phone and an adaptor!
I might consider skye if I could actually find out the costs, but I can't, so until that happens, they're not getting my business...

for 12voip rates
http://www.12voip.com/en/calling-rates.html and other info.
I use 12voip and have a local number area 0151and i think it was 1euro for the number but ive had it for a couple of years so maybe the price is not the same.0 -
The rates look competitive and there's the Free Calls come-on - but I just realised this yet another Betamax product. I tried some of these in the past (one was Nohnoh) and after making the upfront payment qualifying me for free calls to some destinations etc I was always mysteriously cut off for large periods of time and never, ever received a response to my emails to the provider.
Loads of other people were complaining in the forums around the same time. Concluded that free calls to so many destinations were too good to be true after all. Betamax could be controlling it's cash flow by preventing people making calls is what I finally concluded and have never tried a Betamax product since.

Anyway, Skype Out allows normal phones (via 0208..) and my mobile with a Skype WiFi client installed to work so happy with that.0 -

ive never had any probs with 12voip never had any calls drop but i dont make many calls.0 -
With Nonoh - of which 12Voip is a clone - I was OK at the beginning but as soon as I started to use it regularly to try and actually take advantage of the 'free calls' in return for the upfront payment made the account went funny.0
