red numbers are not moving on power meter, will the meter be accurate?

hello,

Ive been monitoring my energy usage very carefully but have noticed that the two red numbers hardly move. the black numbers do move.

is this something i should get checked out? i have an old style meter that's maybe 50 years old and dont want to be "upgraded" to a digital or smart meter.

if anything i think i maybe being overcharged as I have a plug to check the energy usage and it seams to be quite high for the careful user i am.

Turn on your electric shower and then look at the meter. You should definitely see the red (tenths) number move. I doubt that the meter would be 50 years old, you should find a date or date code on it.

  • there is a certified sticker on it, but unfortunately the date on that has faded many years ago. The 100th unit has never moved past 7 and the 10th unit does move but slower than the first unit digit.

on the meter it has s200-16 kw meter and two screws, one for s and one for f. not sure if that helps identify if it could be incorrect?

Perhaps your old S200-16 needs oiling?

Soon you wont have a choice but to have a new meter, the red dial maybe causing it to under read
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Do you mean smartmeters? I though they were not going to be compulsory in the UK.

Its not the propertys meter, they belong to the meter operators and yes they will be soon again

I know they don't belong to the home owner, but even the government has said that smart meters will not be mandatory.

  • they wont be mandatory but at some point they will be the only ones all the meter operators will be installing..
so you either decide to have one, or eventually get cut off...!

Meters are licenced for maximum periods of use before being replaced - 10 years for electronic/digital and 20 for analogue. The electricity distributor (who may or may not be your supplier) manages the swap out.

We requested a 20 year one after our 10 yar one was being swapped - and eh were happy to oblige. We're set until 2029!
