I have one of the £15 cheapies off eBay and it works fine. Picture is not that great, but 'good enough', and it copes at night far better than the price suggests. I leave it on the screen - I reckon that at £15 (and falling) no-one in his right mind is going to nick it. I have to plug it in and out every journey (Mondeo, 12V socket is permanently live) and it's now a habit. I wouldn't be without one. I bought the cheap one to see if I liked the idea and I'm thinking of upgrading and hard-wiring one in.

A point about the ones that switch on and off with the ignition: that's very convenient, but I quite like to leave mine running if I am in a supermarket car park, just in case someone tries a hit-and-run parking manoeuvre.

Does she have a smart phone? Android, iPhone etc?

If so, get a car cradle for it so that it can be snapped into it rather than plugging a cable into it, and download a dash cam app like AutoGuard. Job done.

If you do that, make sure you have the video being saved to a MicroSD card. You'll trash your internal memory if you record to it.

I don't report every episode of bad driving I capture (there are too many!), but where I feel it is dangerous driving I have reported it via policewitness and the police obviously agreed as action was taken against the drivers.

I remember reading a discussion on falsified GPS data (when someone had done so try and get out of a speeding offence) and it was mentioned that the Roadhawk cameras digitally signed their GPS records and Roadhawk would stand up in court to verify their authenticity, is that still the case?

Looking at that Policewitness site, I can't work out what they benefit you are receiving when paying a hugely inflated price for the camera. The voucher savings they quote look like the sort of ones you can easily get on forums like this.

I guess the benefits I feel I get are the vouchers and discounts in one handy place, I don't have to queue to report an incident I have captured on my dash cam, I just send the link to policewitness and they deal, whichever police force, I also get insurance representation, where if I have an accident that is captured on my dash cam and is not my fault, policewitness use the footage to negotiate my insurance claim, instead of the usual knock for knock that insurance companies do, why should I pay if it wasn't my fault. I know that policewitness has a retired Assistant Chief Constable on board and I get updates of all the prosecutions and successes they have helped with, all through the UK, most police forces seem to be on board. It works for me!
  • The cigarette socket charger lead doesn't seem to be that long. Would it be long enough to hide the lead in the headlining and run it through the trim on the A pillar?

I have a hard time believing you genuinely think those are benefits you're getting, any of them can be done easily yourself and if you don't know how, there's numerous sites that will help you out for nothing. The discounts/vouchers in particular makes the site look desperate as you can have those in one easy place in any number of sites or even just delivered to your mailbox.

As for the Assistant Chief Constable being on board, I wouldn't be so sure that's a particularly positive endorsement when the site is selling products of dubious legality such as the fake police hi-viz jackets.

2 Spammers here me thinks. One raving about the product and another to act like an interested party.
I wonder how long it will take them to post back they bought one and its great and saved them a fortune on their 1st journey because of some ficticious incident.

Anyway. Richard53.. RE: the live lighter socket. Move the fuse up or down a slot.
The lighter fuse has 2 positions an upper and a lower. One is perm live and the other is ignition live.

I hope you're not referring to me as the other spammer; the interested party :(

I had someone swerve through the traffic on the A14 doing about 90mph.

They undertook me then changed to my lane and slammed their brakes on so hard their wheels locked up...luckily I was able to avoid them by changing lane.

Ever since then I've had a dashcam, first just an #808 keyfob cam and today I've just received a Mobius cam.

I've recorded about 13 incidents of what I would call dangerous driving, not just driving over the speed limit but doing other stupid things at the same time...this is in the space of a year.

Hopefully I'll never need to forward a clip onto the police but it is reassuring to know that I'll have evidence in the event of an accident.
  • My girlfriend's grandfather has a dash cam in the car. He's hidden it extremely well because I've been a passenger in his car plenty of times and I've never seen it. It's the first time I've heard of him owing one, and he's owned it for months!

I plan to buy one and install it shortly after Christmas.
