I came across the reference to policewitness and wanted to post some positive stories about them. I am a driving instructor and use a dash cam to record my journeys and that of my pupils lessons. I have captured several episodes of dangerous driving and because I got my roadhawk from policewitness my membership was included. They deal with all the clips I send them and then the police liaise with me, 2 episodes have resulted in a driver going on a driver retraining programme and the other was issued with a section 59. I also get other benefits so they have worked for me and save me the hassle of queuing at a police station.

Assuming people want to report every crime they see..

Never heard of them but they are overcharging by about £200 on each camera.

Techmoan on Youtube has extensively tested dashcams and the best he has reviewed is this one

if you jump to 17.50 in the vid you can see it in the car.

That camera doesn't have night vision functionality :( Are there any similarly priced alternatives that do have the night vision functionality?

With similar picture quality? No. Get what you pay for I'm afraid, however night quality isn't bad at all on that considering.

The cheap cameras with the infra red LEDs just cause glare, so you'll be needing to spend several times that to buy one with passive night vision.

Avoid any that say night vision. This usually means some Infra-Red LEDs which are useless on a car camera as they will just reflect off the windscreen.

You want a camera with excellent low light performance.

What about the more expensive cameras which cost a few hundred £? Will they offer good night vision performance?

I remember reading a discussion on falsified GPS data (when someone had done so try and get out of a speeding offence) and it was mentioned that the Roadhawk cameras digitally signed their GPS records and Roadhawk would stand up in court to verify their authenticity, is that still the case?

Looking at that Policewitness site, I can't work out what they benefit you are receiving when paying a hugely inflated price for the camera. The voucher savings they quote look like the sort of ones you can easily get on forums like this.

I wouldn't leave the camera mounted in the car 24/7, for obvious reasons. The best one I've come across so far (link) doesn't have a screen, so I can't tell where it's focussing if I keep remounting it every time I get in the car to drive after leaving it parked.

It's got a 120 degree lens. So you dont need to be that accurate. After a few attempts you can line it up by eye to get the best position.
