Cooking liver for my dog!

Hi everyone,

This might sound like a stupid question, but what is the best way to cook pig's liver for Bully?

I am a terrible cook and have never touched liver before!

:)

I would place it on a baking tray and dry it out in a really low oven setting. Overnight it possible x

When i made hard liver treats for mine I first boiled the liver with crushed garlic added to it, it was boiled until the colour went from it, I then cut it up very small chucked it in the oven until it went very very hard. I'm also a terrible cook but I make liver cake for my pair every week, it's honestly very easy to make and it's like crack cocaine for dogs, I find I can have dogs I don't know following me around the park because they can smell it :o.

I slice it really thin and spread it out on a baking tray and bake it for 5-6 hours on about 80degrees c. Try and fill as many trays as possible to make it worthwhile on the electricity/gas.

I cut it into small cubes, sprinkle with garlic powder & bake slowly 'till hard. It will keep for quite some time in an airtight container, handy if using for treats.

I wouldn't advise giving too much of it in one go.

My dogs were up all night with the trots when I did that!

I bought two pieces as a treat for mine and my sister's dogs...it was only 25p for both bits.

I think I will thinly sliced it and pop it in the over to slow-cook!

    Thanks :) x

I used to chop it and put it in a dish in the microwave with a few tablespoons of water. Cover with cling film and cook until no blood showed. i would then leave it to go cold and bag it up for the freezer. Once a week I would get a little out the bag and mix with normal food.

You do realise garlic can be poisonous to dogs? http://www.petinsurance.com/healthzone/pet-articles/pet-health-toxins/Garlic-Toxicity-and-Pets.aspx

It builds up so the odd time is probably fine but regular feeding can cause severe damage and even kill.

My Mother would serve it to us, the dog and the cat. She just cut into cubes and boiled it with an oxo cube for a short time, till it went brown & not bloody. Just test to see when its cooked by cutting open a piece.

I guess you'd leave the oxo cube out nowadays as its for the dog.

I have a feeling it only took 10 or 20 mins.

Come to think of it, the cat & dog would often eat it raw!
