so upset and embarrassed by waitrose leeds

so i was out and about in Leeds today, and decided to pop into waitrose for the free coffee as well as a bottle of water, as I was thirsty. Looked over the reduced aisle as well, which is a habit for me as I like to see what bargains could be had, which little Waitrose Leeds does reduce quite aggressively, as I have experienced the past few years.

Got a pack of reduced chicken as well as a pack of reduced pork loin. As is the case with most supermarkets, they reduce further and further as the day goes along, and stick new even more reduced price tags on top.

The pork was originally at 3.50 and had two stickers already on it. the newest sticker had a bit out, and i lifted it up to see what the previous price was. 1.50 or thereabouts. new price .69. Fine i thought, abit early (3pm) for such massive reduction, but to my favour in any case.

Uneventfully went to pay for it, even remarked to my companions that the pork was quite a bargain for me today on the way out of the store. I dont have the habit of tallying my receipt and items after paying.

Was stopped by a waitrose employee as well as the security guard on the way out and asked to see my receipt and bag. Fine i thought.

Unbeknownst to me- this employee had been following me around and was waiting for me to pay for the items.

A sticker for reduced salad had erroneously been stuck on top of the previous reduced sticker- and he accused me of swapping stickers with the salad, as he had "seen me pasting down the sticker on the pork"- which I did, as I was just curious as to what the previous price was!!

Then remarked quite loudly in front of the quite busy Headrow that the "pork loin doesnt look like salad, does it?", and then told me that "I'll let you get away with it this time, but you're banned from entering this waitrose, as we all know your face now."

Obviously, I didn't appreciate being labelled a thief- I argued with him, quite loudly back as well- to check the CCTVs, that there was nothing of the sort happening, and why I would replace a sticker and risk it for 80 p. He refused, simply repeating the fact that he'd seen what he'd seen, that I wouldn't believe what people stole, and that I'd swapped stickers and to please leave. I argued some more but realised i was getting nowhere- and just lodged a complaint with waitrose customer service.

I do quite like waitrose as they often have hard to find ingredients and good offers occasionally, which is a pity that i've been banned, apparently.

Just feel so angry at what happened, very embarrassed at being labelled a thief so publicly when i've not stolen as much as a penny ever.

Still waiting to hear back from waitrose. Not looking for any compensation, but an apology would be good. Such an embarrassing incident, spoilt my whole afternoon

Just wondering whether I've overreacted? but I do think his lack of discretion was so appalling especially in front of a Saturday afternoon shopping crowd, and when I did nothing wrong!

If I get bad service in a shop I just don't use it again.

I can understand you getting upset but it's not worth getting into a lather over poor service if there are plenty of other stores to choose from.

    It's their loss, not yours.

If what you are saying s true, I don't think you did - I think the staff member over-stepped the mark. They could have taken you to a private area to have discussed the matter and review the CCTV. Make sure you chase up the complaint asap, in your position I would want to see the employee apologise to you personally but wouldn't be back.

Not really a loss though is it though to loose a customer who religiously goes in to buy goods at below wholesale prices (and a free coffee?)!

Its the embarrassment of being accused so publicly that hurts, I suppose. But then not being able to get a fair hearing as they refused to check the CCTV.

Did you insist on giving all the goods back and getting your money back? I would have.

You mentioned you commented on the offer to people you were with. Were they questioned as witnesses?

If you want to you could push for Waitrose to check the CCTV but I wonder whether it will be able to prove one way or another.

I'd be tempted to write a letter of complaint about not being given a fair, private hearing using the CCTV and witnesses and then let it drop. I'd certainly never go there again.

I would have told them where they could stick their products and demanded an immediate refund of all my goods and asked them as they accused you of theft (criminal offence) for them to call the police where they would have to provide the evidence you did change the labels.

If you get a free coffee I assume you have a 'My Waitrose' card. That will show you as a long, loyal customer I'm sure, and that will help head office along. When you write to them give your card number so they can see you're a regular/spender!
