4 month old baby length / weight?

  • My eldest shot up from being a tiny preemie to being between the 91st and 98th centile for height and she seems to like hanging around there - she's in age 2-3 clothes (some of which are looking smallish on) at just turned 17 months.

My youngest came out and everyone commented how blooming long she was - and she's made sure to stake her claim in the height stakes ever since... she's 5 months, almost 6 months... and going into 9-12 month clothes! Long since gave up on babygros with both of them - they're too unforgiving on long babies - they've slept in pyjamas (with socks if needed) since about the 3 month mark. She was in 6-18 month grobags by about 4 1/2 months too.

Just the way they are - I seem to breed beanpoles and even looking at my eldest who was born teeny tiny and early - her feet and fingers were dead long back then... but hubby is very very tall and they've got it from him I think.
Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!
  • I would say just go with it. At 4 months, she'll be what she's designed to be. Like you said, you're not overfeeding her, just get bigger sizes for now!?!

babies grow to their own schedule - they may grow height wise or width wise - My son was born as a long baby - yet, as an adult his height is 'average'. try not to obsess about Height and Weight - babies don't always follow the 'rules'!
  • DS1 was a long baby, longer than the other 2 even though they weighed more. he was a guzzler too, took to breastfeeding like a champ, he put on weight while in hospital when they usually lose a bit, the midwife said 'what you giving him, steak and chips?'
I was giving him baby rice at 10 weeks as he was so hungry.
The HV kept telling me he'd be really tall and yet he ended up the shortest of the 3, at about 5ft 9". So you never know how they're going to turn out.

Our HVs refuse to measure length (I've asked them to, just out of interest) as they say it is both hard to get right measurements, and doesn't really give them any useful information. If LO fits ok in 6-9 month clothes I would think 78cm isn't an accurate measurement as most of DDs 12-18 month clothes only go up to around 82cm, 9-12 months went up to 76cm iirc. I'm sure it'll all balance out in time - I was still one of the tallest in my class when I was in year 5 but now I'm a measly 5'1"!

My two babies were very tall too, DD was 58cm at birth, my DS 60. DD remained in the top percentile, but then started to level off and her friends became taller than her. However, she shot up when she turned 11 and at 13 is now 5'5''. My son always stayed very tall for his age at at 10 is now 5'. He was such a chunky baby, 20 pounds at 4 months too, went on until he started walking and then it all dropped off and he has been slim since.

I'm only 5'2'' but their dad is very tall. I wouldn't worry at her age, they come with all size and shape. It's when she is 3 or 4 that you might want to start watching her weight if there are any concerns.

My nearly 15 month old is off the chart for height; my 6 week old was measured yesterday and he too is already off the chart. I have visions of them towering above their old mum in the years to come! :)

At 2 month length was 75th centile, if she followed this she should now be 63cms long

At 78cms she is where a 10 month old should be on the 99th centile....

Assuming her measurement is accurate (have you checked it yourself?), common sense suggests there are a few obvious explanations. One is a growth spurt. Two is she has genetic history of tall relatives (your husband's side?) and is likely to be tall, and third is a hormone imbalance. There are no doubt more options.

DD2 was born 6cms off the top of the height scale and has tracked this fairly consistently. She was placed under paediatric observation for a couple of years to watch for hormone imbalance (there wasn't one, just very tall genetics.)

6-9 month clothing at 4 months doesn't sound that extreme to me. DD2 was always 1-2 sizes ahead. Both mine started in 0-3 months which lasted about 4 weeks, after which we mostly jumped to 6-12 months. I think she was in 12-18 months from about the age of 6 months old. She outgrew children's clothing at 11. I think both of mine were wearing an adult size 6 when they were 10, which is so unfair financially.
  • My husband was average height as a kid - shot up in his teens and kept going longer than lots - stopped at 6 foot 7 where he regularly bangs his head off doorways and lampshades.
