Those Readicut rugs are still available - I remember doing one with my aunt - she was finishing the one she started in the TB ward! can you believe that?
I think she still has it - she did last year though its been relegated to a spare room instead of the 'pride of place' in front of the fire! we finished it in about 1959/60 she was in TB ward around the same time as me but came out earlier. so it would have been before 59. I know it was before I started school in 59. and we worked on that rug all winter!
  • My sister commented you could sell almost anything on ebay so I put some green shield stamps on for sale, couldn't believe it when someone did actually buy them :)

My Mum had TB around the same time ...... seems to have not been uncommon-she swore she caught it whilst working on Selfridges glove counter LOL

I remember my (much) older sister collecting Green Shield stamps but also Kensitas (sp?) cigarette coupons. Lots of her inlaws collected the coupons, buying electrical goods mostly, e.g. irons, kettles etc. They must have been motivated to smoke more to collect them. Dreadful really, when you think about it.

The other stamps I remember, from the 50s, were Post Office stavings stamps for, if I remember, 6 pence or two shillings and sixpence. They had pictures of Prince Charles or Princess Anne on them. We got them as gifts from relatives and, I remember well, pooled our savings (four children) and bought a huge garden swing from Lewis's in Glasgow. We had years of fun with that.

I don't collect anything like that these days. I suppose the nearest is the money off coupons that I am addicted to.

Yes I am with you on this one similar thing to the GS. In the 70's we used the NAAFI supermarket all the time. we saved up 3 carrier bags full of the bloody things and my mum got a brand new Hotpoint Liberator washing machine.

yes, remember them and had books full of them. Swapped them for something useful, although I can't remember what, after we got married and money was in short supply.
That's going back a few years but fashions and trends change. In a few years time people will probably be asking "Do you remember bit coins? "

I remember we each got a wrist watch one year from GS stamps and another year it paid for our fountain pen sets for school.
Dad smoked like a chimney and collected Embassy vouchers which bought us each (3 children)one special Xmas present and one special birthday present every year.We were allowed to state a preference by going through the book but if he didn't approve, you got what you got.. Mine was always art related.

Not Greenshield but my now very retro but really nice trifle bowl and dishes are from ESSO stamps that my late father-in-law collected on his his rounds as a tyre rep. As is my rather dated collection of "fashionable" recipe books circa 1989:)

My parent's smoked like lums so embassy and the like stamps bought many a gadget/household item when I was a wee girl.
  • My late Mum collected the stamps from the front of the Brooke Bond 'divi' loose tea packets ,when the card was full she sent it off and got a 5/- (25p)postal order in return We would have cream doughnuts as a treat when she got her 'tea divi' which she bought in our local joe Lyons, then once I came home from school and she had bought some new type of dough nut called 'Dunkies' which wern't a patch on the cream ones and she never bought them again They were glazed and had a hole in the middle like over large polo mints :):):)
