I remember them from when I was quite young, it was great saving up for things.

Yes, the Co-op stamps were blue - it was their attempt to update the "divi" and compete with GS.
I have been known to explain tediously to young Co-op checkout staff that I do not have a "loyalty" or "club" card - I am a member of the important institution that is the Co-operative movement (and I get my divi)

I remember GS stamps and Embassy vouchers. A very funny line from a Rab C Nesbitt show was his missus saying in answer to a Disparaging remark from Rab 'I smoked like a laboratory dog to get enough vouchers for that'! and its true to life - If mum was short on a few vouchers she would buy extra packets of fags to open for the vouchers then smoke like a chimney (or laboratory dog) so dad wouldn't realise what she had done!
  • I cant believe ive just stumbled across this thread my friends elderly grandma has alziemer s all week she has been asking about her green shield stamps book and my friend had never heard of them neither had I. So they are a money saving thing sort of collect them and get money off or save up for something that helps so much my friend sort of has to humour her gran or she gets upset so has been 'looking' for this book all week :) now next tine she says it we will actually know what shes asking about !

    Thankyou

and the individual stamp looked like this

You got a set amount of stamps for every pound spent - but individual retailers could set any amount they wanted and as another poster says 'Double stamps' were very popular!
  • Loads of pictures and pages from the catalogues here

  • I remember the 70s ones - we only ever managed to save up nearly one book full (my Dad obviously went for the cheaper garages...) and I remember wondering how anybody ever managed to collect the 1000 odd you needed to get a family car!

There was a little attempt to revive it in the 80s I think - that must have been what turned into Argos.

But the thing I most remember is a spoof which was done by the Goodies - a Goodie Green Stamps catalogue - in the Goodies' Criminal Record Book. It included such numbers as a lampshade marked "GREEN thing to hang from the ceiling. Will provoke hours of interesting conversation, eg "Please take that green thing down from the ceiling". Comes complete with red thing."

    Ah, those were the days....:o
  • i used to get lots of things off them, they were great ways of saving, i also collected cigarette coupons which i bought a xmas tree and all the trimmings with, although trimmings have changed i still use the tree every year
