How would a duff alternator cause a seizure?

Okay, so you are looking at a car which when you put power on the battery, using jump leads from a running RAC transit, would only just rotate the engine with the starter motor struggling to turn the engine.

In most cases of alternator failure, the engine would spin, and start, and you could put a multimeter on the battery terminals and see that the alternator was failing to put power back to the battery.

So one cause of engine not turning is 'siezure' of the engine.

In this case the alternator was siezed, so when the drive belt to the alternator was removed they could rotate the engine, with a spanner on the crank.
