You should have the red shield on bottom right of screen if it's switched off.

Isn't that the Automatic Updates icon rather than firewall?

Never seen a red shield in my sys tray???? Does this only show in XP Pro, or home as well? Not worried as I have Sygate running.....but I am curious.
I've got xp home and have always got a red shield when it's turned off and a green one when it's on.

Curry_Queen, ignore my post above I hadn't seen yours when I posted!

It's the XP Security Center, which combines Automatic Updates, Firewall and Anti-Virus. Alert (red shield) is given if either of the components is malfunctioning (or switched off).

It only started appearing when I got SP2 now I think about it.

    That's correct - it's a (new?) feature of XP SP2.

Heh, it's a new one I just found but I think it's brilliant too :D

I've got XP pro and SP2 but I don't have either a red or green shield showing anywhere on my taskbar or desk top

I've just checked the Security Centre and XP firewall is definitely off but it knows ZA firewall is in use instead and I have automatic updates switched on. The only place I've seen the shield is when you go to properties on My Computer and select the automatic updates tab and there's a red and green shield on there, hence why I asked if that was what you meant.

I only just installed SP2. The shield was red when I had updates switched off, went yellow when I changed setting to notify me but don't download, and disappeared (I half expected green) when I did the WUpdate last night.

I imagine it would reappear for problems with firewall, AV or WU. Presumably anyone with auto-updates will not see it again.

I had to satisfy my curiosity and go and turn updates off ... but still no shield!!! hissy7px.gif

Unless of course it doesn't appear until I've re-booted ... but that can wait :D

My shield is there all the time and if you hover it says "Windows security alerts" and in case I forget when firewall's turned off it reminds me every day.
