I've found any new releases are available on LoveFilm at the same time as the DVD becomes available in the shops, its the streaming where there is a delay before its available.

I find the streaming is OK on my pc, but rubbish via my sony blueray player which keeps buffering. Id use it more often if I didnt have to sit in front of my PC to watch anything.

    I haven't found that.
New releases such as Percy Jackson 2, The Croods, Pacific Rim, The Great Gatsby, Man of Steel, The Wolverine, Hangover III, Despicable Me 2, RIPD and The Heat are all available to buy but not yet rent (can't even reserve) on Lovefilm. Will have to wait until January or February before Lovefilm have them available.

Many of those are now available on Sky Movies.

Lovefilm have a dispute with the studio I believe, it used to be they didn't have their movies at all for rent, now it's a delay which is an improvement.
  • I've just found out that Lovefilm have now also stopped their payment holiday option.
I'm having huge delays in getting my discs back at the moment (funny how none of my other post is affected this much by the Christmas post, just Lovefilm! Almost as if they're using Christmas as an excuse for poor service.) So I thought I would put my account on hold until the New Year but it turns out the option was withdrawn a few months ago.
I've been with Lovefilm for years and was always happy with them before they were taken over by Amazon but sadly now I think it's time to get a faster broadband connection and try out Netflix instead!

That's down to Universal wanting people to buy the movies instead of renting them.

I don't doubt there is a dispute, but my take was Lovefilm wouldn't pay the prices Universal were asking, and that's why new releases were totally unavailable for a time, while on Blockbuster straight away when they were doing dvd rental by post. Even when Lovefilm were offering them but with a delay Blockbuster had them available upon release.
  • I still find it hard to believe that people are still renting physical discs by post. Sky Store (and Virgin's equivalent) has every major new DVD available to watch (in HD) on day of release- no scratches, no waiting, no buffering, no Post Office.

In addition, Netflix and Lovefilm are available to stream through many SMART TVs and even Blu-Ray players..

Yeah but isn't that only in 720p instead of 1080p? Whats the point on all the money I've spent on my large TV if I can't watch 1080p?

That to me is the main selling point of why I still use Blu Ray disks.

I buy and watch Blu-Rays too, but I'd never consider renting them.
  • I don't get why anyone BUYS or RENTS film. You can get nearly any film from TPB in 1080p with a HD sound track and pay nothing...

LoveFilm by post is cheaper than most alternatives. 9 films per week for £13.27 per month - that would cost £136 to rent from Sky or elsewhere. Even just watching one film a week from LoveFilm would be better value. Sky Movies subscription - more expensive than LoveFilm and with all the exclusivity problems.

If you care about popular films then CineWorld in person and LoveFilm by post or Netflix is better value than Sky.

I've stayed with renting physical DVDs from Lovefilm because I want to watch more than just the "major new" Hollywood blockbusters. When I first joined they offered a huge range of films and TV series on DVD, old and new and world cinema as well. Also most of their films are not still not available to watch online.
However, their service (and the choice available) is rapidly going downhill so I'm forced to start looking for an alternative.
