.......... and I suspect that sort of person has worldwide health insurance anyway (as I have :) ) that covers them in the UK too rather than specific travel insurance.

Photome perhaps someone who has airline info could answer that one about heart attacks etc, I would be interested in the answer.

Yeah BUPA do a worldwide plan, we have ours though Allianz
I have (effectively) private health insurance wherever I am, home or abroad.

As above you don't have to buy Thomsons insurance but you do need someones insurance because if Thomson airline do a spot check at check in and ask for your insurance their airline can refuse to fly you. For example, you are taken ill mid flight and the plane has to divert to the nearest airport and you have no insurance who's paying for all the costs involved with that.

    Is this 100% true?

If it is then I am quite interested in this, have you got any proof, personal experience, friends experience etc?

In regards to compulsory TI, I agree everyone should have it, but by making it compulsory you would shift the market and prices would rise substantially.

I'd be astonished if there were any cases of passengers [or their insurance company] being invoiced for a medical diversion

I don't believe it happens and is probably just - made up on the spot - bunkum

If it was the case, you'd be required to take out cover for every country you flew over or near, just in case

Think Mr wang meant can Thomson refuse to fly you if you don't have insurance not about the medical diversion.
In my own personal experience I haven't had any one refused a flight or made to purchase insurance, but it is in their t+cs so we do inform customers but obviously we can't force them to buy our insurance.
