Lol. OK so going by Thomson's terms I do need it? I didn't actually book through them I booked through Ola but the flight is Thomson not sure that makes any difference. I have found a company called insureandaway that works out just £8 for us both doubt I can get it cheaper than that

How much is your excess if you make a claim?
For instance if you get admitted to hospital and your medical bills are £2000 say, can you afford the excess, as some policies have excesses of £200+ personally would prefer to pay a little more up front and have a low or no excess.

I used to work in medical repatriation for an insurance company so saw the other side and realize it's more than just the hospital costs.

If you are hospitalized for an extended period -your family may want to stay out there with you.....who pays their hotel costs (and transportation to and from the hospital to visit....and food etc), who pays for an interpreter...... who pays for their flights home (and yours) once you are discharged, if a driving holiday-who pays to store the car, maybe drive it back to the UK . Would you be content to stay an extra month in a foreign hospital as you couldn't afford to be air ambulanced to the UK (and then transported from airport to hospital by private ambulance), could you afford to pay for a nurse or doctor escort if you are deemed fit to fly but only with a qualified escort, airlines need paperwork before they will carry you - can you afford £100 for the hospital to process these ...........and on and on.

After seeing what *can* happen -I wouldn't do a day trip to France without travel insurance. It's so cheap it'd be insanity not to take it.

The other thing I don't understand is people who book a holiday and don't take insurance out until just before they fly-so have no cancellation cover if they or a non travelling close family member gets sick or dies and the holiday can't go ahead. It's not like it costs less if you take it out later after all.

I once booked a family with six kids a trip of a lifetime to Orlando (when I was a high street travel agent)-it was beyond their dreams but they had a pools win that paid for it (remember the pools LOL) three days before they were due to fly one of the kids went down with chickenpox and the airline wouldn't have carried them .......insurance covered it all and they went six months later instead.

Only an idiot travels without insurance.
Strangely the rich never seem to object to insurance .....maybe they are rich because they are good with money and don't take daft risks with it though ;)

Guessing the OP didnt really want to take out insurance (its their perogative whatever anyone thinks) so has found a cheap policy, its not likely that after finding a cheap policy they will then take your advice and spend more just to get a lower excess.

Most people will never make a claim.

    EDIT
    I wouldnt travel without any

Most people's houses won't burn down either ....but that doesn't mean you don't need house insurance. (My OH's house actually did -he says he doesn't begrudge a penny of any insurance he paid)

Is there any facts to back that up about the rich not objecting to insurance.

IE would any of the dragons off dragons den travel with or without insurance, I have no idea of the answer but I would suspect they travel without

House insurance isnt compulsory either (unless it is a condition of your mortgage) I believe some people cant even get it

The debate started when someone said insurance should be compulsory.

We are enough of a granny state already

I agree with you about the granny state business (thought it was nanny actually but that would be picking hairs lol), but as I said in post 4 why should airlines have to pay for something out of their control, which is why people should have insurance. Also nowadays some countries won't let you in without insurance ie Cuba.
