Premium Bonds

Do other users and bond holders think it's odd that one never hears of big premium bond winners by name. When you think that lottery winners have their names plastered all over the press but i've never seen a £1000,000 winner by name only by county. This could be the next scandal, that there's no such thing as a winner and the cash is all going into government coffers,or am i just an old cynic.

Considering how long its been going for I think it would have been exposed by now if that was the case, NS&i would have to keep many an employee past and present very happy to keep quiet which would be pretty much impossible to do.

The only scandal people associate with PB's is if they are any good to have - my view is if its part of a diversified portfolio then thats fine (I have PB's, ok the returns are not great but its a safe place to park a few quid with easy access to the money), I would not recommend PB's as a first place to start.

You're right, the government keeps all the money, we never went to the moon, and Elvis lives a quiet life in Hemel Hempstead.

Is this because he didn't want to go to Chelsea?

It is always different this time. The only thing that is the same is the outcome.

Yeah, it's such drivel that it doesn't even rise to the standard of being cynical.

Well they are certainly using our money for next to nothing if that counts.

So just to fan the flames, is there any real evidence to support the claim that newer premium bond numbers win the bulk of the prizes on offer each month?

I held the maximum number (£20K at the time) for a few years. I can't remember the exact details but my experience was that I just saw a gradual drying up of regular payouts and ended up being quite disappointed in their performance overall and cashing them in. This was at a time when the minimum payout was £50 and I think (without looking it up) the maximum number held could reasonably expect to win two minimum prizes a month with average luck.
