... OK, so between you and the farmer's wealth of knowledge ... grannies and sucking eggs comes to mind ... so will put myself to bed now.
Already done with the hinges, I can't take credit for being that clever, the farmer did it! I will look out that sort of padlock, thank you!trix-a-belle wrote: »what she ^ said re gate hinges!!
also might matting on the door be better for his hooves rather than metal?
You see, this is why I shouldn't be left on my own. I had matting up his last stable door, why would I now think metal was the way to go??? And why had I forgotten matting altogether?? I've called round for some quotes, but I'll probably go with the people where I got his last lot of matting as they did such a good job of fitting it.Total debt at October 2008: £67,213.30

Today's news?
Several calls for stable matting quotes and a letter from the tax folk telling me I owe them £160:( In other words and advanced warning of expenditure day:(
Colin found a mouse. I don't think he caught it himself, rather found someone else's left over mouse. He was happily chucking a stiff dead mouse round the garden and looking generally very pleased with himself
So a day of rubber matting thoughts, tax demands and stiff dead mice - Quite run of the mill really ...Total debt at October 2008: £67,213.30

Hum, rubber matting is THE way to go if you can on flooring. The ancient old one adored his rubber matting big thick green stuff and so good on bedding and disposal of bedding saved more than initial costs at one winter!
Hope you can solve HMRC issue with tax code change???

If you do go for matting on the floor, price up cow matting as its the same stuff and could be cheaper. Put the word equine in the title and then add the ££££.

I hope the tax man can swollow your £160 by changing your tax code slightly?
My fat cat also loves "salvanging" stiff and very dead mice/birds/frogs what ever he can get his paws on! I'm sure he feels just as proud swaggering around with his findings then the actual pride from "the kill"

I think it's the sole responsibility thing for two oldies. I've always had other people around to ask questions or opinions of before. I think the two boys know it all better than I do anyway and will make no bones about telling me what is needed. I must remember to get a metal reinforced bit fitted on the Captain's stable door, he likes to rythmically kick it until his meal arrives. He has already taught Noah this trick much to my friend's joy
Thanks for the explanation, at least there is some good advice and support available on this very thread about hoss issues, as evidenced above. Not the same I know as having someone on the spot but maybe you'll find someone local for that kind of support? At least the boys will keep you right .0 -

You'll be fine
I was terrified when Merlin first came here on loan, but over the years I've learned to trust my judgement. I also have a fabulous farrier who would be the first to speak up if he saw anything I'd missed.
