  • Went to Lidl today and got lots of ideas for an Xmas food hamper for my parents. Loved the look of the panetone (and chocolate panetone!), stollen and various shortbread. Also saw some Christmas Spice fudge which will go down well.

I've heard of people making Christmas cakes in ordinary tin cans from baked beans or similar. I'll see if I can find a link for you.

That's just one od thread but I'm sure if you post on the OS board you'll get some help.

Thank you, I would never have thought of using tin cans! I just read through the thread and it seems very do-able. Now all I have to do is declutter some beans for our meals this week and sort out my ingredients.. x

Hello. I have just come across this thread. I normally save for the £25 Wm Morrison voucher they do every Christmas and buy a fresh turkey crown from there every year - I pick one around the £22 mark -although I think I need to spend £40 instore to redeem the voucher. I always feel its FREE because of the voucher offer.

But I have never thought of getting a frozen turkey crown from Aldi. Are they good? I cannot fault the fresh one from Morrison but to be honest, it's all I have ever tried.

The thought of paying £10 for one and not using the voucher is starting to appeal to me!

    Thanks....

They are delish we always buy at least three, we have 10 for xmas dinner  and tea so use a lot in sarnies as well.Put it this way they had them there on Thursday morning my sis went to buy one Thursday evening and they had all gone.

Didn't realise the stollen are hazelnut, will have to investigate :D

Really should have made the Christmas cake by now, it's just been too warm to have the oven on for hours.....

Sainsbury's have some really lovely interior Christmas decorations in atm. Last years string lights are reduced to half price (£7.50).

The hazelnut (and I think an almond one) are speciality lines. Our Lidl now has the usual 'bog standard' stollen in stock. Exactly like last year except that it's shrunk to 750g and still costs £1.99!

Better get some whilst they're still around then - any idea of the expiry date? I remember think in previous years that £2 for a 1kg stollen full of nuts and marzipan was a bargain but I guess inflation has taken a big bite :D

Their mince pies are vegan and tend to be reduced every year as they approach the expiry date in early December, they then tend not to stock up on them again in my local store.

As for the panettone, £4 is just too much for something that I can eat like candyfloss, although I accept it is so much cheaper than in the other supermarkets. I generally wait until Feb / March when the 99p shop has pallets of the stuff in stock although this isn't guaranteed. I didn't see any this year despite monitoring the situation carefully :o

Morrisons have tins of sweets at 2 for £7, this week only, ends on Sunday.

The sign says "Excludes Bassetts and Maynards" and the ones on the shelf at my local were Roses, Quality Street, Heros and Celebrations.

I expect it is an offer that will do the rounds of all the supermarkets, so if you can't get to a Morrisons hold off buying them in another supermarket for a while.

4 bird roasts sighted in Aldi £9.99 (I think) they have two types, the traditional one and another with clementine and cranberry glaze.

They're all £4 in Asda at the moment for anyone not near a Morrison's. I'm holding off buying them at the moment due to the fact I'd eat them :o
