In interesting and thought provoking question.
I'm estranged from my siblings, both parents have passed away.
Other relatives are many miles away. But value the contact and support of a couple of cousins, and an Aunt.
Then there's the love-of-my-life and her family.
Still miss my cat, and though many will think it 'weird' value the guidance from my paternal grand-parents from the great beyond.
Even 'love' my goldfish for the tranquillity they give me!
I am estranged from some one close to me. If I cared less I probably would find it easier to be in touch and let the difficult things not touch a nerve.
I have quite a strict policy these days of not tolerating the most difficult family members in my 'circle'. E.g. I find it stressful dealing with dh's immediate family, there is no 'screaming and shouting, they thankfully are not that sort, but while I fully encourage DH to maintain lots of contact and I will join in occasionally with bil on Skype the only one I have seen in some years is sil and that was only last Christmas. (Though we are now emailing quite a bit).
Similarly, I keep members of my own family at an arms length. (Edit...not that hard, not many in uk, and no surviving grandparents now or anything like that. I was also born 'between' generations....I came extremely late to the party, almost late enough to be the next generation down but not quite, so had no natural family 'group' .)
The only people I emotionally need is me, the only person I emotionally want very badly is DH, then a few very close friends who are the people I want and miss close to me in times of need and great joy. Oh, my animals, most of them. I lost my horse who i'd had for almost twenty years in spring and I couldn't talk to anyone but DH in person for a week. I dealt with clients etc via email. DH wanted to get another horse quite soon in summer and I tried, but kept being relieved when horses he was finding weren't right. Its only now I am feeling more positive, and not sure I will ever be that close again, because I loved that horse with the passion one gets for things as a teenager and young woman.0 -
I love my boyfriend, my mum and her parents my darling mama and papa. But one of the things that has really got me through life, particularly before wonderful OH came along, is the love I have for my little sister. I'd be nothing without her!First home purchased 09/08/2013

My OH, mum and step-dad, and our dogs.
The rest of my family I've cut off, OHs family I'm not too close to, though neither is he and friends come and go too much for me.0 -
I don't know if my friends and I are odd in that we tell each other that we love each other. Recently at a gig my friend (who I've helped out a lot practically recently) gave me a hug and said 'you know I love you dont you'. A very special moment.
I tell my family and partner that I love them all the time. I don't think it dilutes what I feel or what it means to them. But I am also a very tactile person so everyone in my life gets showered with hugs and kisses as well. That said at work I'm fairly reserved, and dont tend to be 'mates' with anyone let alone love them!0 -
I love my close family, some more than others! I absolutely love my grandparents, they're my two favourite people in the world. I definitely care about them more than the rest of my family, same goes for my cat. He's old and has a bad attitude most of the time but he's lovely to me and waits for me to return from work.

Of course my mum and brothers, all other cousins and aunts and uncles - not close enough. I care for them but wouldn't say I love them.....
I love my dog:p
I like my friends but don't love them.
Love of my life is my husband and he tells me every day he loves me but I'm not very good at saying it back

what a lovely post. I wish I'd of had a more loving relationship with my grandparents but I lost them when I was quite young.0 -
I love my mum and my son.
I don't love my partner. I am in love with him. Love and to be in love mean two different things to me
