how will my HB be effected if son takes on apprentiship

I have 2 children at home one agde 2yr and the other one 18. I get child benefit and child tax credits for both of them as the 18 year old is still in education. I also get income support and full housing benefit.
my son today has been told by the college that they have recommended him for an apprentiship and he will also still be at college. and he really wants to do this. how will this affect the benefits I receive , I guess I will lose the benefits I receive for my son which is ok but we are more worried if or how it will affect the housing benefit and council tax thank you in advance:o

If your son takes on an apprenticeship you will lose your Child Tax Credit for him and the CB.

As regards HB and CT support he will be classed as a non dependent and a deduction will be made from the HB and CT support according to how much he earns.

You can find these deductions on your local council website.

Pmlindyloo is correct but my council don't actually show the figures online, only goes up to last yr.
You might need to just call them, it will be worked out on his gross wage, not his net.

Don't forget that there'll now be an extra income coming into the household, which will help financially.

I'm in a similar situation, my 16yr old has a place in college starting in September, but has now taken an interest in doing an apprentiship as he wants to earn some money. I've suggested trying to find a weekend type job and keep college, but he seems set on the apprentiship (if we could find one).

I'm trying to find out how much we would lose in benefits, but only the CB paperwork seems to break it down to how much for each child (I have one younger child).

As far as I see it, it's not really an extra household income. Yes, my son would pay me some weekly money for his 'keep', but he should be able to keep most of his earnings for himself I believe.

You're right it's not an income, in the same way a husband's income would be received into the household, but he'd be independent and buying his own stuff. e.g. new clothes, going out with his mates, haircuts etc.

It's his first lesson in "where money comes from and how it disappears all too easily", from which he should learn the value of money and realise than two crates of lager for his mates down the riverbank in late summer = no dinner on the table for him as you could only afford your own food as he didn't dip into his pocket to give you his keep that week.

As you son is under 18 there will be no non dependent deductions

You need to check whether he could do an apprenticeship as the laws have change about having to be in some kind of education until a later age.

Will try and find a link.

Seems that apprenticeships counts as education.

An apprenticeship counts as education but it may well not count for child related benefits - the criteria are different.

Thanks, I thought if the apprentiship was a paid one, then I would lose benefits.

Maybe I should just call my own council/tax credits and ask.
