Alex,
sweetheart if your parents are on pension credits, then the only place you'll be visiting them for Sunday lunch soon will be your local open prison.
It's a top up to the minimum income they need which the state deems to be £222.05 per week for a couple.
There's a calculator here https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit.
For everything they have in cash and investments over £10k they lose a pound of potential credit for each £500 as it's deemed they'll earn that much in interest.
Give their BTLs, state pension, company pensions and investments at time of retiral I can't see how they won't blow this out of the water. As I said, mini-k's prep fees will pretty much do it.
Hope Mrs K is back alive and kicking.:A Let us be grateful to people who make us happy: they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. Marcel Proust :A0 -
Hi Alex see your feeling a tad angry with your oh and I would be too. At the very least she could have got a baby sitter and gone with you.
Try and count to ten and do something to take your mind off things. Thats assuming your still up.
I meant what I said Alex if you need to talk to pm me.
She got back before you made your post but I'm still not happy about yesterday and thank you.Alex,

OK and you are right, there is no way they have pension credit, I didn't know what it was and at that time in the morning did not feel like investigating.
To be honest, if / when the house swap happens they will no doubt have the builders in for weeks on end ripping my house to shreds in order to get the place up to their standards, anyway.2018 totals:
Savings £11,200
Mortgage Overpayments £5,5000 -
Also today I saw a van advertising "free" boilers and insulation, does anybody know how one qualifies for this? Our house is not in the best state of repair in this respect and should Mrs. K. agree I can see us doing this house swap with my parents in a year or two and I'd rather they did not end up in my house in it's current state.
Some local councils have schemes in conjunction with British Gas and the only eligibility criteria is that you have cavity walls of a certain size ( meter squares) and/or a loft of a certain size that is under insulated.......we had our 1970's 2 storey extension cavity wall insulated after my OH measured it for them as they didnt take into account it was 2 storeys! Couldnt have the rest of the house done as its over 130 years old with 3ft thick stone walls. They did look in the loft but as we had done a 'very good job' already they couldnt improve it. The only time we have EVER got something for nothing:DBe the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Igamogam: Thank you. The house is Victorian and constructed of brick, our loft is insulated - we did this ourselves when we moved in. Before we bought the house, it had been unoccupied for quite a long time so we got it for a good price to say the size of the house and grounds. However, we haven't got round to the "big jobs" - life and finances have got in the way too many times.2018 totals:

Alex - its very sweet of you to want to do the house up for your parents - but they have the money and you do not.
If they are happy for the swop as it is then don't worry. Maybe your mum & dad would enjoy the project themselves - and give your dad something to occupy him and keep him motivated.Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. -- Sally Koch0 -
£26,500 pa is AVERAGE? I wish I was average, OH earns a little below that and I earn WELL below that!
Alex, if your parents want to rip it to shreds and do building work then let them get on with it and spend their money
Agree with kissjenn, take £2k out of the F&F money if you desperately need a boiler - just make sure to put the savings from bills into the pot
Can you catch a cold via forum? I think I have one...

Could still be worth checking it out. My near neighbours insulated their loft but had it 'topped up' under same scheme.Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Amen HBS! I bring in a little over that but hubby is nowhere near thanks to his qualifications holding no weight here at all and the job market being so horrendous!
