Due to a diving accident in 2010 my right inner ear no longer functions which caused severe dizziness I did have private health and extensive physio is the only possible cure however since losing my job my private health stopped so am awaiting specialist physio via a London hospital so currently my health is deteriorating as I am not having any treatmenti have chronic dizziness and nausea unless I'm laying down. I am registered disabled and get high rate for mobility and middle rate for care and recently won a appeal re my ESA income related benefit which took a year but was over turned by the drs the day I arrived at court, as atos had seen me fit for work however the day before the atos medical my old company had paid for me to see a specialist diving doctor who in a 9 page medical report said I was a health and safety issue for any employer and to work in any capacity would be detrimental to my health and well being on this basis my employment was terminated on the grounds of capability this is a company I had worked for for over 20 years.
As I can no longer work my house has had to be sold to pay my outstanding debts . I have been allocated a social worker as I am listed now as a vulnerable adult as I cannot cook or function normally on a day to day basis my condition is variables can be bedridden for 3 to 4 days then able to move around indoors for one day then can be bedridden for another 2 to 3 days depending on many triggers that can make the dizziness worse .
Once my house has been sold I will have no equity left and my son who currently lives with me is moving away with his job so I will be homeless what are my options I have no money as all my saving have been used in the 3 years I have been ill.i 'm scared what will happen to me and my future.

I can't make sense of that.
What benefits are you currently on.
Do you currently own your house?

You have been allocated a social worker. I would imagine they will also be able to advise you on housing. Personally, I would put an application in as soon as your house is sold, or even now given your disability.

Is the house you own suitable for your disability?

Since the accident I very rarely leave the house and most days stay in a bedroom which has a ensuite , I am left on my own most of the day the social worker has only just visited even thou they were contacted back in January and offered shopping support however my house has only been sold this weekend . Just scared of my future
  • Before your son moves out, ask him to help you find somewhere to live. Don't rely on getting social housing, it is scarce and although you will get some priority because of your disability, it is unlikely you will be at the top of the list because they will see you as having made yourself intentionally homeless.

In terms of private rentals, you'll need to check the relevant (one bed) LHA rate for your area. You can rent a property with more bedrooms, but you will only receive the one bed rate.

Have you spoken to anyone about using the sale proceeds to pay off your debts? If they are not priority debts, this may be deemed to be deprivation of capital - speak to someone from the DWP before doing this.

Unfortunately social services are pretty useless and cannot be relied upon. Your son needs to step up and make sure you are settled before he moves on.

Can I ask what happened to the wife and red setter that you had in February? Your son may be moving out, but are they also homeless with you? And where are they during the day? Also, do neither of your pension schemes have cover for a permanently disabling injury of the type you describe? I may have misunderstood, but I believe you had two schemes? Any other income you may have, such as pension rights or a spousal income impact on the advice that you will receive. And owning a pet may also impact on the choices available to you.

I sympathise as I have no inner ear function and suffer nausea and dizziness but I work full time and have a pretty active life.

I qualify for ESA (don't claim) on a separate issue as it hits a descriptor yet the one that causes problems is my drop attacks and vomiting from ear related issues.

I find some alternative therapies help me, have you looked at this? I still take motilium and beta histine and anti dizzy tablets daily but life style changes really helped.

The reason the house is being sold is my ex wife wants her half as we are getting divorced and so I don't have a choice , I have a debt charity looking and advising me however the debt companies want there money once the house is sold , I am not really in a position to look for a property as I can't get to see them . My son has his own life to live and will be living abroad for 6 months he is moving out in a months time , the house has been on the market for a year so the offer which came this weekend and has been accepted has scared me as I haven't been able to ma ke any plans till it had sold now I'm worried

You still need to speak to the DWP. The fact that you are in a debt management plan will help, but don't pay out anything until you are sure they are ok with it.

Yes, your son has his own life to live, but you looked after him for (at least!) 18 years, so now it is time for him to do his part.

You have an inner ear problem in one ear only, it really does not have to mean end of life as you know it.

What medication are you on, what have you tried?
