  • I was thinking of buying from from ElectricPoint. com... I am not allowed to paste links but the 3.3kW model is 690 instead of 790...

Also we need to keep in mind that even if Dimplex is saying that 3.3kW model is the equivalent of 1500W heater... is not.
    Maximum charge is 23.1 (3.3kW x 7h). So 23.1kw / 17 h = around 1350kW... probably the fan is taking 150 kW

    Just to keep in mind!
  • An electrician came around my house today and he told me that he needs to install a new fuse box for the storage heaters (180-200 pounds) and he also will charge me 15 pounds/hour to install them which I think it's good :)

Also he said that the night tariff is only for the storage heaters and nothing else can be added to that... but I've read online that I should have a "fused spur" whatever that is and everything should move automatically to the night charge(lights, fridge, etc)

    Thoughts on that?

    Thank you!!!

Thank you so much Casp for all the info, I am convinced now :)

I think I will buy the biggest ones anyway apart for the one in the hallway because of the price difference...

Also my rooms are quite big. My whole apartment is 130 sq. m. (living + kitchen=57 sq m. and bedrooms around 30 sq m. each ans some storage which I don't need to heat) and they are smart and if they are not required to take a full charge then they will charge a lower amount over night which I think it's better in time if they are not used at 100% all the time.

Also if at 3am it's cold I am sure the booster will adjust the temperature properly.

I only have one more issue now and I am waiting for an electrician to sort me out. Next to the old storage heaters there is only one power socket and these ones need 2 so I will have to see how much will it cost me to have a second plug installed...

One more question... Can I hire any electrician to do the job or is it a special requirement from Dimplex to use certain electricians?

    Thank you!

P.S. I will pay them on cc as well... :(
I had the same problem where I only had the Economy7 power outlet. I just got a normal electrician to fit the standard power sockets beside them. You do not have to get s specialist or Dimplex to do that.

I had problem with space. I would of preferred a larger heater in the lounge but space would not allow it. If you have room for the largest heaters then I would definitely recommend you buy them. A bit more expensive but you will benefit from the extra heat they will put out.

Using the boost setting on peak electricity is not that expensive. I think I worked it out at about 11p per hour.

I know very little on the workings of Economy7 Just that I have a fused spur and split electricity meter. All that runs off the Economy7 is my hot water tank and my heaters. Your lighting etc wont run off the Economy7

Yes, buy them from Electricpoint.com. They are the cheapest I could find and where I bought my heaters.

    Just a quick add on...

Have you looked at the Creda range of Quantum heaters? They are the same company and built in the same factory in Ireland, but I am sure they work out cheaper.

Also I know you have a few niggles, but the credit card purchase wont help you with Dimplex. You bought them from either your retailer or installer. The contract is with them, any discount off the next one will be through them not directly off Dimplex. It is for the retailer or Installer to negotiate any goodwill from Dimplex, I would be amazed if they offered you anything directly. I work with them almost on a daily basis and they are not the easiest to deal with !
    Creda Quantum here..

    Dimplex version here

I am well aware how the credit card thing works and have no intentions of going that rout. My issue is that Dimplex have manufactured and sold a product that does not operate as they say it should in there instruction manual. This is a breach of the trades description act and why I am dealing with them directly, It has nothing to do with the retail supplier. I don't care how difficult they may be to deal with, because if I get trading standards involved they will have to listen. I hope that I wont have to go that far, but will if they continue to ignore the fact they are at fault here.

I found the Creda version more expensive than Dimplex. Also tradecounter.co.uk is not the cheapest, Electricpoint.com are VERY much cheaper. You don't work for tradecounter by any chance do you ? LoL

Both are the same heater anyway, just branded with different names.

One more thing that I would like to point out is the Dimplex guarantee. With all heaters you get a full parts and labour guarantee for 2 years. But on heaters bought after October 2014 they are offering an additional free extended 8 year guarantee. Dont be fooled by this, because from what I make of it I cant see any single part that is covered! Well, maybe the bricks inside are, but I cant see how they can go wrong.

    Exclusions!‐!what is not covered:

    • Heating elements, electronics, electromechanical devices and ancillary electrical components
    including fan and air‐mixing device.

    • Failure due to product used in an industrial application

    • Failure due to product not maintained in accordance with instructions

    • Failure due to damage to product, accidental or wilful, or caused by faulty installation.

    • Paint discolouration

    • Call out charges where the faults are excluded from the guarantee.

On most tariffs, all electricity used at night-time is on the night rate. You only need special circuits for things which only come on at night-time.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • hi I got a quote from my electricity company in June 2013 for 2 X QM125 and 1 X QM100 the price they quoted was £3800 plus VAT for the heaters , also I needed a new fuse board, another spur for 24 hour supply .

I bought my heaters from the electric center and the cost under £2000 including vat. got my local electrician to install the heaters never need a new fuse board he made up all the heaters installed them all day sunday and the cost of him was £250 a big price difference from my electricity company.

Yes. The big boys are known for charging you for things you don't need.

My electrician charged me £150 for fitting the two peak electric points. I then fitted the heaters myself. Very easy as all instructions and wiring diagram are provided with the heaters.
  • Hi Guys,

I've sent an email to Dimplex and asked some specific questions but they replied with a vague response... Email as below.
Anyone fitted a QM in a bedroom? I am staying home 3 days/week and I pretty much use the bedrooms as a living room.

    Thank you in advance!

Thank you for your email. There are alot of questions and answers that you need answered prior to having the Quantum System installed. If you visit our Website you can have a free Survey and our guys will come out and talk you through exactly what you need to know. I would say though, that I would not have Quantum Storage Heaters in my bedroom, because of the overnight charge, this will make the room hot and rather uncomfortable, I would personally have Panel Heaters so that you can have the heat as and when you require, but that is my opinion and everyone is different. You can regulate Quantum Heaters accurately, and if you do not use the entire stored heat in one day, the overnight store will only top up thus saving you money and being more energy efficient. I would have a free survey and the surveyors will work out exactly the amount of heat required for each room.

Subject: Question about Dimplex Quantum heaters

    Hello,

I am interested in buying 4 Dimplex Quantum QM150 but before I go ahead I have some questions about them.
My bedrooms are quite big, 30 sq. m each and my living room is 57 sq . m. I was thinking on going with the largest heaters QM150 (2 in the living room and 2 in the bedrooms) just to be on the safe side.

    1. Is the fan making a loud noise?
    2. Can the fan be turned off say from 10pm until 7am? Can the fan be controlled at all?
    3. How hot can in it be in the bedrooms at say 6am after a full charge is taken? Do they stop charging if it gets too hot in the room?
    4. How much heat is lost in 12 hours after a full charge if I am out all day?
    5. Is the boost element heating the room or the bricks inside? Do I manually control the boost element or is it automated?

I am interested having about 19 degrees during night time and 21 during the day.
Additional info: I have a top floor apartment, in a solid brick building(ex dock converted into flats), top to bottom windows, metal frame (1.6 m by 2 m)

    Thank you,
    Andrei

I thought that I had already answered all these questions in my post above! Anyway, let me try again.

Like you I found the Dimplex customer service guys very little help. They tend not to give a straight answer and often pass your question on to someone else. A month has passed now since I asked a question about the “extra charge” feature on these heaters and I still have not had a reply! The last I heard was that they had sent an e,mail to there factory in Ireland and waiting for a reply. I am starting to think that they are hoping I will get fed up waiting and go away. I WONT.

    1) Is the fan making a loud noise?

As I said in my post above, the fan is silent. The only time you hear anything is first thing in the morning when the outside air is being mixed with the stored heat inside of the heater (read above) Even then the noise is just a gentle whooshing noise, no different than having your car heater blower set on a medium setting.

    2) Can the fan be turned off say from 10pm until 7am? Can the fan be controlled at all?

Once again as mentioned above, the fan would not normally be operating when you go to bed. It is set to shut down at 10.pm (you can alter this) and not come back on until 6.30am (you can alter this) Either way you can adjust the speed that the fan runs at if you so wish.

    3) How hot can in it be in the bedrooms at say 6am after a full charge is taken? Do they stop charging if it gets too hot in the room?

These heaters tend not to get as hot on the outside as conventional storage heaters. That is why they have a fan to push the stored heat into the room. I have found that if I got up at about 3.am the heater casing would still be cold. I cant be sure, but I don’t think you would feel any heat until around 4.30am. Even then it would not be enough to notice without the fan operating. The amount of energy that the heater stores is fully automatic. Just after midnight the heater will reboot itself and at that time will take on all your previous days heat requirements and then store energy on that basis. It also can detect if it is a very cold night and take on more charge if that is the case. All this is fully automatic. Although I do not have one in my bedroom, I don’t think the casing would generate enough heat to cause you a problem.

    4) How much heat is lost in 12 hours after a full charge if I am out all day?

Honestly they will lose very little. That is the beauty of these heaters. Unless the fan is in operation the heat will stay inside the heater. Last Saturday I went out for the day and set my heaters at “out all day” When I got home at around 5.pm the heater casings felt just as hot as when I left at 7.am and the heat they delivered that evening was much hotter than when I ran them at “home all day” I was very impressed by that.

5)!Is the boost element heating the room or the bricks inside? Do I manually control the boost element or is it automated?

The boost element is completely independent of the storage heater. It does not heat the bricks. It is like having two heater in one. A storage heater and a fan heater. If you have to use it you just select “boost” in the menu settings and how many hours you want it to run for. Then set the room temperature that you want and forget it. It is fully automatic. If you look at the grill at the bottom of the heater you will see the boost element glowing when it is running and then turning itself off when the desired temperature has been reached.

These heaters have so many different settings that you can choose from that you will find there will be a setting for your particular needs. But even the factory settings can be changed to whatever you want. The heater even has a holiday setting where you can select the dates you are going away and coming back and the heater will do everything for you.

By the sounds of things the property you want to heat will require the largest heaters, because the size and the fact you have large industrial type metal windows with no double glazing will require extra heating.

If you read this in combination with my previous reply I made to you then I think you will now have all the information that you require. They really are very good heaters and I think you will be very happy with them. I know that I am.
