Also to add i see Dimplex can supply a shelf that site 150mm above the heater, has anyone got these and are they just normal MDF? Just trying to work out if Dimplex are trying to rip me off at £30-40 for a shelf

I bought a shelf for my old DIMPLEX XLS heaters and they were metal
  • Hello everyone,

I want to say that this "blog" is a really great read!

I am thinking of buying some Quantum heaters as well. I have a 2 bedroom flat with big rooms and I was thinking of buying 5 of them(2 in the living room, and 3 in the hallway and bedrooms).

I usually am home 3 days in the week (Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday), the rest is the usual 9 to 5. Also my wife has some back problems and she needs to lay down quite often so I can safely treat one of the bedrooms as a living room.

I have a couple of questions... I was wondering how much noise is the fan making? If I go to bed at 10pm can I sleep with them on?
Is the fan working all the time or just now and then?
Is there a quiet setting or something like that?

Casp55, I understand that you have 21 degrees all day from a full night charge until about 11pm in your house. I was wondering what temperature do you have during the night.

    Thank you!

First of all I would like to say that I would recommend the Dimplex Quantum over the old XL storage heaters that I used to have as they certainly keep the place nice and warm for the entire day and evening. But I have found one problem and will get to that in a minute, but first I will answer your questions.

Depending on the size of your bedrooms I would be very careful on the size that you select. For me I do not like it very warm in the bedroom. In fact I rely on the heater that is on my small landing to spread heat into my single bedroom. That works well for me as I also have an electric blanket. If I was to install one in the bedroom then it would be the smallest.

To be honest I do not find the fan noise a problem as it is only really noticeable first thing in the morning. This is because the heater is at full charge at that point and you do not require the maximum heat from the core to warm the room up. So what they have done is fit an air/heat mixer flap that partly closes the core and draws some air from outside, then mixes that air with the stored heat. This works very well and one of the reasons the heater can retain its heat for such a long period. By lunchtime that mixer flap is no longer in use so you can hardly hear the fan when it is operating. When I say "noise" it is no different than having your car heater fan set on a medium setting, just a gentle kind of whooshing noise. If I had one in the bedroom I do not think I would find it would bother me. It is not a high speed fan anyway, just enough to push the air into the room. The "noise" is only caused by the air hitting the mixer flap, there is no noise from the fan itself as that is silent in operation. And no, the fan does not run all the time. Only when it is delivering heat to maintain room temperature. Just that if you have the heater running all day then the fan may run constantly all evening, but you would need super good hearing to hear it.

The heater is factory set to turn off at 10pm, so it would not be operating when you go to bed. But you can change the operating times yourself. I have mine switch off at 11.pm. You can also over ride these settings and use the "boost" setting. This will turn on the separate element and combined with the fan will give extra heat if required, but be aware this option will use peak time energy. I have only had to use this option twice during a very cold spell in the evening.

I am not sure why you would want the heater operating at night. Even in my old house that had central heating it was set to turn off when I went to bed. I was plenty warm enough under my duvet. The heater will start taking its charge some time after midnight and by around 4.am will start generating radial heat but without the fan, so no noise whatsoever. Depending how you have it set the fan wont come on until about 6.30 am. Basicly these heaters are not really designed to run while they are taking on a charge. It is recommended that they do have a rest period.

With regard to your question about the fan setting. Yes, you can set the fan to run slower if the noise did bother you, so I should imagine you could make it almost silent, although I have not had the need to try it.

I have found that if I want to keep the room at a constant 21 degrees I have to set the thermostat at 23. The fan will then cut in and out so as to maintain room temperature.

I will now tell you about the only problem I have found, but this may not be such a big deal to some people, because if they are working and the heater is set at "out all day" then they are unlikely to ever need to use the feature.

Because I am home all day I have found on very cold days the heater has used well over 50% of its stored energy by 6.pm. Although the heater does manage to keep the place warm until 11.pm you can see that it is struggling, because the fan will run the entire evening, where during the day it will cut in and out. When I bought these heaters that was not a concern to me, because it said in the instruction manual that you could have the heater take on an extra charge during the night of between 1-4 hours to compensate for this. However, I have found this is not true. I have set my heaters to take on the full extra 4 hours of charge but it makes no difference. I have spoken to the Dimplex technical guys and they have told me that the heaters can only take on an extra charge if the off peak tariff allows it. Of course with Economy7 this is not the case, but they do not mention this in the user manual. A false stament and very misleading.

I have used the "trade description" card against them and they are currently in talks with the factory in Ireland to see what can be done. I have not heard back from them in two weeks. I will give it another two and then phone them again and say that I am thinking of contacting Trading Standards. Hopefully that will make them sit up and listen and take my complaint more seriously.

Would I buy these heaters again? Yes I would most defiantly, because they are so much better and efficient at storing and delivering heat than the old type of storage heater. The cherry on the cake for "ME" would be if I could get the above mentioned problem resolved, or at least acknowledged that they have made a mistake and offer some kind of compensation/good will gesture.

I am not an unreasonable guy, but if I buy something because it has a feature that I want/like then I think I have good cause to complain when I find it does not.

Go and buy your heaters. I think that you will be very impressed with them. I know that I am. (apart from the niggle above)

Did you pay for them on a credit card? If not...
Did you pay for any portion of them on a credit card?
  • Really helpful post there Casp55. Can I ask two questions please? What kind of ambient temperatures are your heaters having to cope with when they run down on all day use? I'm really interested in getting these for a flat in Cornwall but it rarely gets below 5° in the winter. How well does the heater transmit heat into adjacent rooms? I'm thinking of having one in a dining room and hoping it will heat an adjacent small kitchen and perhaps a bedroom.

Yes, I did pay for them on my credit card, but have no wish too use that as a way of getting my money back, because I am very happy with the heaters apart from that one problem.

What I am hoping is that Dimplex come back to me, admit there has been a mistake and offer some kind of good will gesture.

I still require one more heater too complete my installation, so hopefully they will help me with that.

Well this past week the temperature here has not gone much above 4 degrees at best during the day and down to -3 at night.

Dont get me wrong. When I say they run out of heat by 6.pm there is still enough to keep the rooms warm enough until I go to bed at 11.pm. Just that instead of the fan cutting in and out as it does during the day it will just run continually all evening. The only thing that bothers me about that is the fact it may cause the fan motor to fail sooner at some point in the future. But then I once had a property for 15 years (it was already 10 years old) that had warm air heating and I never had any problem with the fan motor on that.

I live in a small single level apartment with the kitchen leading of the entrance landing. The kitchen has no heat, but the heater on the landing does spread into the kitchen well enough to keep it warm. I think Dimplex state that the heaters will give a 50% spread to other rooms, but I honestly think that will depend on the size of the rooms in the first place.

Right now I have two heaters and leave the kitchen and lounge doors open all the time. Between the two heaters they manage to keep my place warm enough. Just that I would like to take on an extra charge at night so as not have the fan running all evening. Not that you can hear the fan, but would probably save having to buy a new fan motor sooner than I may have to.

Although my place is small and on one level the two heaters that I have allready do not manage to heat the bathroom and one bedroom. That is why I want a third that I can place in the small 6 by 3 lobby that faces the bedroom and bathroom so as to heat those two rooms as well. I have already experimented with this and know it will work well.

If you have the heaters set at "out all day" then you would not have to worry about this, because you will have more than enough stored energy to keep you warmer than you may want in the evenings. Just that I happen to be home all day and want them working for a longer period.
  • Thank you so much Casp for all the info, I am convinced now :)

I think I will buy the biggest ones anyway apart for the one in the hallway because of the price difference...

Also my rooms are quite big. My whole apartment is 130 sq. m. (living + kitchen=57 sq m. and bedrooms around 30 sq m. each ans some storage which I don't need to heat) and they are smart and if they are not required to take a full charge then they will charge a lower amount over night which I think it's better in time if they are not used at 100% all the time.

Also if at 3am it's cold I am sure the booster will adjust the temperature properly.

I only have one more issue now and I am waiting for an electrician to sort me out. Next to the old storage heaters there is only one power socket and these ones need 2 so I will have to see how much will it cost me to have a second plug installed...

One more question... Can I hire any electrician to do the job or is it a special requirement from Dimplex to use certain electricians?

    Thank you!

P.S. I will pay them on cc as well... :(

    Just a quick add on...

Have you looked at the Creda range of Quantum heaters? They are the same company and built in the same factory in Ireland, but I am sure they work out cheaper.

Also I know you have a few niggles, but the credit card purchase wont help you with Dimplex. You bought them from either your retailer or installer. The contract is with them, any discount off the next one will be through them not directly off Dimplex. It is for the retailer or Installer to negotiate any goodwill from Dimplex, I would be amazed if they offered you anything directly. I work with them almost on a daily basis and they are not the easiest to deal with !
    Creda Quantum here..
