The old storage heaters were too hot at night to have in a bedroom - how do the new Quantum heaters compare?0

Have just found your thread and wanted your and anybody else's opinion/advice please.
My 93 year old mum lives in a retirement apartment and the heating is only via storage heaters. The one in her living room seems very inefficient and so we have decided to replace that one, which must be over 25 years old. Peverel (managing agents) promote Dimplex quantum and someone from SSE is coming round on Tuesday to measure up and give a price. We went to an electrical distributor (WF Electrical) and looked at it - unfortunately she doesn't like the look! - it is very bulky and she doesn't actually need a combined convector heater as she has an electric fire as back up. Have also had a price for an Elnur storage heater and WF Electrical gave us a price for their Sector storage heater which it seems is made by Dimplex. My concern is that she will find any operating instructions hard to manage and she will be disappointed and we will have gained very little. I can't find any 'reviews' on different makes of night storage heaters - Jaggeroooh, a very useful 'blog' but you say that you have to set it the night before and from what I have read I had the impression that the Quantum had a more sophisticated sensor which would mean she wouldn't have to do any of this?
Any comments/opinions welcome.0 -
now I have had the quantum heaters on from 3rd of November to July the 6th I have only used 7588 units compared to 12450 units last year I have saved over 4500 units @.10p=£450 saving this year, over the time the heaters were on they only charged up when I need heat into them and let heat out when it was required.1

Can someone confirm that the use of the quantum giving heat at set times during the next day is only using the charge from the night before? It really does last all day without a boost from peak time tarriff ?0

now a year on since I have had the Quantum heaters installed on the 3rd of November 2013 I have only used 9085 units compared to 12275 units used in 2012 I have saved over 3190 units @.10p=£319 saving this year.
Before others rush to change to Quantum heaters, you should be aware 2013-2014 has been a very mild year when compared to 2012-2013. My electricity usage has dropped by 2440 overnight units and 141 day units.
When you say you pay 10p per unit, if this is the E7 off-peak rate it seems rather high. Have you shopped round for prices? My overnight rate (higher than others because it's a fix to 2016) is only 6.24p. Day is much higher at 15.64, but I use over 75% at night.0 -

Yes it was a mild year in 2013-2014, my heating in year 11/12 was 10655 heating units and 3289 day, year 12/13 was 12275 heating units and3371 day , year 13/14 was 9085 heating units and 3202 day.
The tariff I am on is THTC the prices were for day were £0.1943 a day unit and £0.981 a heating unit.
When I got the heaters installed I was going to change to E7 or E10 but the prices were going to cost 2.1p more for day and 1.3 p more for heating.
I would like to change but I live in the north of Scotland and my power supplier have only the control of THTC.
So to sum it up I am very happy with the Quantum heaters and the way the are working AND I have fixed my prices for a year and the price are £0.1535 day and £ 0.774 for heating.
(AND ALL THIS IS MY OWN OPINION ABOUT THE HEATERS AND EVERY ONE HAS THEIRS)
(I have no connection to quantum )

The simple answer is yes. Although I found that the previous nights store was not enough to give a comfortable heat level after 10pm. I solved this problem by selecting the option of taking on extra charge the next night. You can do this in periods of 1-4 hours. I selected the one hour option and it now keeps a good temperature until I go to bed at around 11pm.
With regard to folks questions about the boost setting. The "on-peak" element will only kick in if the stored heat falls below 50% If that is not the case then if you select boost it will just use off peak stored energy. A very good and efficient idea.
The only down side that I have found, after just one week of installation the fan has stopped working! So as of this morning I am having to rely on radiated heat only and the Quantum is not very good at doing that. I have just phoned the Dimplex service department and they are sending a guy out, but said it could take 3-5 working days! Not very good for a very expensive heater that is only one week old. That said, if I can get the fan problem sorted out then I think the Quantum is a very good heater.0
