Thanks for the get well wishes you kind people :) So lovely to read them.

Felt a little better so ate breakfast which made me feel a lot worse :( but now back at desk. Nice spot of reading diaries then paid self and juggled funds. Nothing to overpay, but have cleared credit cards (winter bedding for horses, deposit for lorry, lorry insurance, car road tax) so reasonable there.

MtM day 10 "slash food bill by 35%". Wahoo! Sounds good.
I need to download an add on to my internet browser that will compare prices at all the major supermarkets as I shop online. OK that sounds reasonable. Will use it next time I do an online shop. Maybe some one on here has already tried "my supermarket companion?". If so feedback welcomed.

  • Hi everyone,

I'm new on this forum and Watty1 you have done well and its very inspiring. I've recently joined and been reading your regular posts. I too would love to pay off my mortgage earlier. I have 13yrs left. Better late than never to try and start. I've recently had a life changing event in my life approx 2yrs ago which has affected my health. Am at the stage now where I am trying to get myself back on track.

I've always been a hardworking person and each time I saved a lumpsum of money, I use it up for emergencies. Now I have no savings whatsoever and unable to work till I get stronger.

So I am left with a clean slate to begin with. I am planning from now to think of ways I can earn money from home part time at least until I am physically stronger. Any ideas peeps?

Secondly, I want to start saving but don't know if to try ISA or credit unions? Wally1 you mentioned shares/stocks. how do you deal with those. Could someone point me in the right direction please.

Everyone keep up the good work as I know it is not easy.

Well NikkiSaint all I can really suggest is reading up on the main website. I wouldn't dream of offering advice. My only experience of stocks and shares has been to 'play' by picking them and seeing what happens to my picks. I've not tried real money on them yet. I think this forum will have lots of great advice but maybe in the debt free and savings pages than the ramblings of someone after paying off her mortgage. Good luck.

MtM day 11 Lower car insurance by massaging your job title. Yep think I have got that one covered in the past but, as our insurances are both due in a couple of months I did think up some titles to check out when I do the quote. The MtM programme that it will take 5 mins to check your car insurance is a little optimistic as I usually spend around 4 to 5 hours on this filling in the forms and getting quotes then ringing to 'haggle'.
So far this MtM programme is making me feel quite organised financially which isn't quite what I suspected :)

Last of the vases of Sweet Peas went out today. From an unpromising start, the plants have provided 3 jam jars full most weeks and been a joy throughout the summer.
Local farmer came and took away the muck heap today (£150) and over the weekend I hope to remove the sweet pea remains, weed and cover the ground with rotted muck ready for next year.

MtM day 11 revisited. Found the job checker on the MSE site and found we might save £5 to £10 if Mr Watty puts down civil servant rather than engineer for his job description. Hurrah a tangible saving for the MtM 30 day plan.

MtM day 12 today. Make sure I get the cheapest petrol everytime I fill up. Great idea but will require a level of planning I aspire to rather than achieve :)

If I had a smart phone I could do it online whilst out and about but I don't so means I need to check prior to going out. Hmmm... Anyway not wishing to be negative I did log on and register for the updates at petrol prices.com and check out whats local. Well, actually there are only 2 stations anywhere near here and I know one is usually 2p a litre in the week and upto 4 p a litre cheaper at w/ends. And the last time I made Mr Watty fill up at Stressco he was delighted to point out that it was cheaper at the local :(

However it did occur to me I could check the prices at the local supermarket when I do go there. (Local Sainsburys was 2p a litre cheaper today).

Nice restful Saturday. No idea where it went actually. Kitchen extractor fan has developed a life of its own. Does not respond to the on/off switch at all. Suddenly turns itself on at full power. Most odd. :)

Supermarket bill was half what it usually is thanks to food plan and meals in the freezer. And the fact that I'm still not feeling that well.

MtM day 13. Train travel savings. Split ticketing website bookmarked. I rarely travel by train. Not that relevant!

Nice walk with dog and a lovely free log found by side of road. Must have fallen off a log delivery. Came home and popped on woodburner which is alight to dry the house out after all this rain.

A woodburner must feel like a real treat at times. My fingers have started to go numb, time to turn on the CS!

You should be able to save some money at petrol, at least in the short term. The price of oil has fallen/various supermarkets seem to be trying to outdo each other. Petrol is actually cheaper now than when I started driving 15 months ago.
