No Buying Unnecessary Toiletries September 2013

  • I'm going to give this challenge I try. I don't know if this is the right place for me, because I must admit, I don't have half as many items as some of you have listed - I'm actually a bit of a minimalist! - but I have a slightly warped view of what is an appropriate amount to spend on toiletries (£10 deodorant, anyone?!), and I always fall for special offers (buy 2 nail polishes, get another 1 free) and pretty packaging, not to mention the promise of loyalty points. (I love Boots, but I think I need to stop shopping there!) I also love Lush, but I've realised that Lush products should be bought as a special treat or received as gifts, not bought regularly as staples. I guess I just need a bit of a reality check, and to decide what my priorities are (fancy hairspray is probably not very high on the list!).

Here's everything I own at the moment:

    Toiletries
Original Source Mint & Tea Tree shower gel
Johnson's baby shampoo (I use it to clean my make up brushes)
    Boots 99p shaving foam x3
Aussie Miracle Moist shampoo (this is about to run out)
    Aussie 3 Min Miracle conditioner
    Lush Veganese conditioner
Arm & Hammer Advanced White toothpaste
    E45 cream
    Lush Enchanted eye cream
Bobbi Brown Extra Eye Repair cream
    Kiehl's Anti-perspirant deodorant cream
Lush "9 to 5" cleansing lotion
Johnson's baby powder (I use this in my hair instead of overpriced dry shampoo)
    Boots nail varnish remover
    Neutrogena Anti-ageing hand cream
Neutrogena SPF 100+ sun cream (yes, you read that right!)
    Elnett Very Volume hairspray
Bed Head "Queen for a day" thickening spray

    Cosmetics
    Chanel No5 perfume
    Smashbox Photo Finish foundation primer
    Laura Mercier mineral powder foundation
    Revlon ColorStay liquid foundation
    Benefit Boi-ing concealer
    Bourjois concealer stick
    Clinique Naturally Glossy mascara
Carmex Moisture Plus tinted lip balm x4 (I love these things!)
Carmex mint lip balm (very nearly run out)
    Barry M red lip liner
    MAC Russian Red lipstick
    Rockalily Roulette Red lipstick
Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter (in yep, you guessed it...red)
    Lipcote
    Benefit High Beam liquid highlighter
    Benefit High Brow highlighter pencil
    Revlon ColorStay black eyeliner pencil
Rimmel Glam Eyes black liquid eyeliner
    Rimmel white kohl pencil
Rimmel eyebrow pencil (extremely short; will need to replace very soon!)
    Barry M nail polish x4
    NARS nail polish x3

I haven't tried the Elasticizer before but think I am going to get the magazine so I can try it. Am also tempted by the Bumble and Bumble product free with Elle magazine.

im impressed with the bumble and bumble, i think it has given my hair a bit of extra volume and texture without being too much. I'm considering picking up another copy before it goes off sale as itd be useful to throw in my gym bag, trying to convince myself its being greedy and loosing my own arguement :rotfl:

You have sold it to me :rotfl: will have to pick a copy of Elle and InStyle up. May read the magazines on holiday although I don't really enjoy magazines much anymore because a lot of the stuff in them is unrealistic or unobtainable in my opinion.

Good luck in your new job tomorrow too - a pamper evening sounds like a good idea to me :D

    Good luck for tomorrow.

Having looked in my hair care drawer this morning, I think I can justify the Bumble and Bumble and the PK Elasticiser. I found 2 x 50ml of shampoo and I have a 1 litre of PK Flaky Itchy Scalp, but like to have two to alternate so will start researching ready for a purchase next month, sensitive scalp and slightly fine hair so have to be careful what I buy.

OH and I love sharing our lives with a dog/s, for many years we worked too long hours to be able to have one, but when we moved south we lived and worked in a very small town, we had different lunch breaks so were able to adopt two dogs as they were never left for more than 3 hours, now we are retired and Miss MM has a very spoilt life with us, lovely walks, large garden and lots of attention. She is our sixth rescue/rehome woof, but will probably be our last because of our age:( OH is older than me and I cannot walk very far:mad:.

i have gone off Elle recently since the new revamp. i think the writing quality has improved and the new columnists are great but its trying to be too "bloggy" and use twitter references loads in the articles and i think its just lost in a monthly mag as the point of blogs and twitter is immediate and not with at least a months delay whilst its compiled and printed.
  • First day in, and I have had a clear through whilst doing my stock take. I have 9 outs:

    Tresemme 24 hour body shampoo
    Tresemme 24 hour body conditioner
    No7 cleansing body polish
    Olay complete UV fluid
Botanics base bath, body & massage oil
    Specsavers contact lens solution
    Specsavers contact lens solution
    Simple hydrating light moisturizer
    Carex handwash

The shampoo and conditioner has been replaced by the tresemme moisture range; I bought huge bottles from costco and shall be decanting them in to these smaller bottles.
No7 cleansing body polish was lovely, just the right level of scrub and foam, wmba but this was very old (in the pink and silver swirls design) so has probably changed.
The base oil was amalgamated into a home made body oil, wba but again was old
Two specsavers solutions thrown out as they have been open for over a month, another 10 or so to use
Carex blue hand wash, this was in the kitchen, replaced by a special kitchen handwash. Fine to use though and would buy again.
Olay fluid and simple fluid, too light for me and both left a film that would 'pile' when makeup was put on top, wnba.

I've been sorting out items as I go through my stash, have prettified my bathroom with two displays of miniatures - out of sight out of mind comes in to play, so I've put my loveliest items out on display!

I have a sample of Elasticizer but still have not tried it, I will make an effort this week to try it.

    UU's
bomb cosmetics bath bomb WNBA still prefer lush
Lush magic mushroom bubble bar WMBA a little too sweet for me, still have 1 left.

I need to go and sit on the naughty chair, I made ordered 4 products last night after spending yesterday thinking there is nothing I need or want. I am going to have to try harder.
I have got a few things out and took a photo to remind me that I have enough probably to open a shop but this seems to make little difference. I definetly have less than when I starter in March I think I am down about 180 products so I am atleast heading in the right direction.

The photo underneath is 2 draws of 12, and I really need to reduce this further. I have other places too. This does have all but 1 soaps that I own (apart from a couple in a jar in the bathroom) but it is still a silly amount.

I feel I should apologise for my enabling with the Elasticizer, but I love the stuff. Also, it was apparently made for a certain Ms. A Hepburn, so you can feel like a star as you use it!

    Another out:
TA: OXY on the spot (expired) WNBA didn't do much and apparently benzoyl peroxide is worse than salicylic acid for the skin, so I'll stick to my SA treatments.

I'm writing a stash list in an app, because i lost my last paper list. Just on face care I am in the 40s. Eek, eek and thrice EEK!

ETA: Another UU: FCUK pure body lotion CBA as it's been discontinued! I hate body butters so this was quite nice while it lasted...4/5 years.....Now onto one of my 4 Righteous Butters. Bum.
