I agree, 55" quickly becomes normal.

No and no. My 42" TV is in the corner of the room so it faces the sofa, and the room's quite small. It doesn't dominate the room

Likewise. In a 4x3(ish)m living room I went from 24" (or thereabouts) CRT to 40" flat. First evening I thought 40" was a big mistake. Within days it felt absolutely normal, and that very much remains the case few years later.

Look at the big sets in one of the high street stores - then buy from either Richer Sounds or JL!
Also don't scrimp on the size -I bought a 51" 18 months ago -seemed huge to start with -now I'm salivating over 65" models:rotfl:

...........but make sure you have a big enough room to sit well back from a big TV when watching SD - otherwise you will see how Bad SD really is :D

    I'm another JL fan............

  • Update here.

We plumped for a 40 inch TV from John Lewis - one that was recommended above - but have had terrible service from them.

A mixture of no communication of delivery (us having to chase even though they state they will call within 2 days), then misinformation on whether delivery address can be changed from different advisers to a 'out of our control Sir attitude' from 'customer services'.

This is our first experience with them and resulted in the TV being delivered on an inconvenient day (one we were supposed to agree with them but instead they imposed) to the incorrect address.

Wont be rushing back to John Lewis. We thought (before this) that these were some of the good guys?

    Two less customers here.

We'll be shopping locally for this TV now.

It was Nightfreight. We were advised by J.L (after we had ordered) this was because we were out of J.L delivery range. We assumed (very wrongly) that J.L were supposed to coordinate.

As it was we had to chase to find out when it was to be delivered from John Lewis (Nightfreight didnt get in touch) - and the date seemed non negotiable, then was advised (wrongly) by J.L that the delivery address could be changed via J.L.

Then was given the run around by email by six different advisers (who seemed to 'advise' us different things) - even after asking to raise it as a complaint.

I'd rather pay a little more and get a decent level of service than pay for staff bonuses for these sorts of organisations.

Taken the shine of what was a lovely thought from one of our sets of parents for a wedding present.

    Hey ho....

I do appreciate you that got back to us. Its given us a real feel for what we want.

    Thanks again

Richer Sounds will beat any price, shop or internet, provided it includes 5 year warranty and delivery (they say next day, but didn't check this when I bought my pvr) unless the retailer to beat is in the local area.

The amount by which they beat is on their website ( eg £10 for tv over £300) and depends on price bracket. If you enrol for their newsletter, you also get a £10 off voucher. Delivery is free.

To be honest, initial delivery failures are only a minor problem. It's after-sales service where lots of retailers fall down and John Lewis is correctly highly regarded because of their no quibble five year guarantee.
Forget the fact that you were out of area for delivery and JL used an outside delivery agent..

May I suggest that not receiving the TV on the right day or to the proper address is a bit more than a minor problem!! Without actually getting it we will never know how good this 5 year guarantee is!

I think you're agreeing with us (in your last para) that J.L should have sorted these issues. And that as a customer who was charged to deliver it should have been irrelevant as J.L should have coordinated and hence the ultimate responsibility is with them.

Anyway moving on....just wanted to highlight how poor JL have been.
