Coffee Rip Off Britain

Tesco Value ground coffee isn't bad either but my favourite is Douwe Egberts
Have you seen chavy latte and their top ten ways to save money at Starbucks - they mention Tesco value roast and ground as well...0 -
Dried compost.
That makes an excellent alternative to coffee.0 -
Hello,
Stamford, am living in Rotterdam at the moment - the reason there is no starbucks/costa fortune etc is cos the dutch government have had the foresight not to let them invade and ruin their high streets, thanks god!
As a result, a decent cup of coffee over here often costs between 1 euro and 1.50 - and little local cafes with character still exist - brilliant!!
Very rarely get poor coffee over here, and a chocolate or cookie often comes as standard. Bit of dutch trivia for you - if you want a latte you need to order a 'coffie verkeerd' - literally translated this means a 'wrong coffee' !!(cos its a lot of milk and a little coffee instead of the other way around!)
Asking for a wrong coffee always makes me smile for some reason! (actually starbucks must know about this, cos every time I go in - in the uk- their coffee is wrong - and not in a good way!)0 -

Thanks for the "local" input FC I couldn't have put it better myself.
Incidentally another UK rip off is exposed in Rotterdam - "Fruits de la Mer" big platter of seafood including half a lobster at the 4/5* Hotel New York 32 euros, about the same as I paid when last there 3 years ago. Local Waitrose here charge £19 for a paltry platter with no lobster to take home0 -
Get your coffee at weatherspoons
Trouble is if you buy it at a wetherspoons you have to drink it there - I would rather pay £2.50 in Starbucks for a freshly made coffee and sit next to normal people than in Wetherspoons where I would be sitting next to a p!ssed old perverted man at 10 in the morning who's staring at my girlfriend!
Snobby as hell and not my usual sort of comment but I'd rather go without a coffee than sit in a toilet-pub drinking machine crap and sit near the brown paper baggers!0 -

cool, was it good? - haven't eaten there yet, but it is a lovely place! there are lots of excellent placs to eat out here without breaking the bank - if anyone is visiting rotterdam and wants any eating out tips I am happy to oblige!
I find that supermarkets and markets are cheaper over here too (even Aldi and Lidl - 2 part baked baguetted for 17 cents - about 12p), as well as having loads of variety cos its such a multicultural city!
Turkish bakeries are great, but lots of huge loaves and fattening syrupy sweets! I love dutch cheeses and belgian/german beer (which is less than £3 for a crate of 24 bottles from the supermarket!!)
Turkish food is also great for quick snacks on the run - a turkse pizza (turkish pizza) which is basically a flatbread spread with a thin layer of tomato and meat spicy sauce (bit like chilli) topped with salad, then garlic mayo and sambal (hot sauce) and rolled up - very tasty and fills you up - average price E1.50-2 (about £1 - £1.35)!
I cannot see why food would be so much cheaper over here - wages etc are pretty similar, so yes it does suggest that we are being ripped off in the UK. However, all this food isnt doing much for my finely honed (ahem) physique!
Although all that seafood and lobster you describe is making me a bit peckish....0 -
I only use the Costas/Starbucks, when travelling long distances, on a normal day I stick to my fave Jamaican Blue Mountain, cannot stand instant coffee, and I couldnt bring myself to drink 38p a jar coffee. I like expensive coffees, it is expensive, but one of my essentials in life, so can justify it to myself.0

The experience of drinking coffee/tea etc at a Cafe is not just about it's price; it is often a social occasion. You meet friends, family, read, watch the world go by...
My children love the experience of going, it is a good way for us to sit and chat whilst enjoying a nice drink and a cookie. OK, maybe some establisments are expensive but there are still plenty of cheaper corner cafes left. Uhhh, I need a cup of tea now, must go and put the kettle on.SSB0
