Coffee Rip Off Britain

I've always viewed these places like Starbucks, Costa Coffee etc with extreme cynicism and amazement that the mug British punter is happy to shell out two and three pounds for a mediocre cup of coffee.
This was born out by a weekend trip to Rotterdam - the Dutch have always provided good quality reasonably priced coffee. I did not see a single branch of Starbucks or Costa Coffee but we had nice cup of waitress served tea & coffee on a rooftop terrace in Central Rotterdam for a grand total of 3.50 euros

I dont normally pay them silly prices and have no intention off if I can help it. I did have a Costa coffee last year on holiday driving on motorway, OH decided to get some, I didnt like the coffee tbh it was far too strong, and poured in on the grass after a few sips, the tea wasn't much better either and was the opposite, weak.0

Hi there
The only time I have had Costa coffee on any scale was when I was in New York a few years ago. One time I have had it here (waiting for late arrival of DH at airport) it was very mediocre and cost a lot - but of course airports are notorious for the price they charge for things!

It is very nice and a great deal - I'm sure they're not doing it at zero profit either - Lavazza I think is the spelling. My local 'Spoons used to have a billboard outside highlighting their 69p and the rip off prices of their poncy competitors0 -
It isn't a case of 'Rip-off Britain', it's more like 'Rip-off monopoly chains'.
There are still plenty of small local coffee shops in every town that give good service at a good price. And better coffee.
If we don't keep using them, they'll close and all we'll have is Costa Plenty etc.0 -
We are becoming too American.
Expresso shots? Vanilla flavoured syrup coffee? What....what?
Its all gone to hell.....
Bring me a cup of tea with a lemon drizzle any day!0 -
The best coffee I have is at home made in my cafetière. Sainsbury's basics ground coffee really isn't too bad;)Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:
