It annoys a friend and I when we meet sometimes for a coffee and they ask 'do you want chocolate on it' when we order a capuccino. It is like asking if you want bread with your sandwich

You would be surprised at the number of people who say 'no chocolate thank you'. Or more accurately, 'no', I've given up expecting the words 'thank you'.

It's not a rip off - if people are happy to pay inflated prices then that's what the coffee shops will charge. I'll stick with my cup of instant!

I would rather spend £5 on a cup of decent stuff then drink instant coffee ;)
IMHO Starbucks is too bland, and Caffe Nero makes nice tasting coffee :)

I've always viewed these places like Starbucks, Costa Coffee etc with extreme cynicism and amazement that the mug British punter is happy to shell out two and three pounds for a mediocre cup of coffee.

I enjoy a Starbucks coffee with my OH when shopping, am happy to "shell out" two or three pounds for a fairly hefty size mug of coffee and have never experienced a "mediocre" cup of coffee there. I also don't consider myself to be a "mug" for doing so!!

    snap

i dont mind paying £2.50 there cos the coffee is Lush.
i like my flavours too and they seem to have the nicest mixes.
peppermint latte is the best way to start your day IMO

the only thing costa is good for is the ice coffee's (they do a nice choc flake thing) or the summer fruits slushy ice thing.

starbucks only nice drink was the eggnog latte...yummy. the rest arent worth the £3

I agree with the sentiment on here. Get your coffee at weatherspoons or a local cafe. The starbucks of the world are full of posers on mobile phones anyway.

On a separate issue, can someone tell me why the streets are now swarming with women with massive mugs of designer coffee in the mornings? Is it a fashion thing? When did you ladies make the switch from tea?

I'd rather have a coffee from Starbucks than a mug of instant coffee; but I definately prefer making a pot of coffee in the morning with good quality whole bean coffee, then taking it to work in my insulated mug. Cappuccino isn't really coffee, it's just a hot milkshake for grownups - a nice cup of filter coffee is much better, from Monmouth or Union Roasters or another independent roaster who sources their coffee ethically. And anyone drinking a frappucino looks ridiculous! Really, that's not coffee! It's just a dessert with a straw!

i go to starbucks and coffee republic, why because its nice (i dont drink coffee but other stuff)
there is little alternative, i take drinks with me to work but sometimes i really want a hot cold drink (have tried bringing a flask but its a pain), theyre easy to get to, the paninis are nice, filling and cheaper than subway,
have tried some of the smaller coffee shops and cafes but drinks just arent as nice, at a point where i can afford to treat myself so im going to

Maybe I would but fortunately we don't have to make that choice.

There isn't a town big enough to support a Starbucks/Costa/etc that doesn't have several small coffee shops and cafes tucked around the corner that serve better coffee at half the price. And you get proper, friendly service too. And home-made scones, teacakes etc.

Support them now or the big boys will put them out of business!
