Need Urgent Help. . . please!

Options
Hi guys,

I'm not a mum but i didn't know where else to post this.

I started a job just a few days ago, but i don't get paid for another 2 and half weeks. I was on jsa for about 5 weeks but that was cut off last week so i don't get the last payment i was relying on.

I don't have any family i can ask for help and the one person in my life isn't in a position to help either. Also, i cannot get an advance on my wages.

It's already been nearly 3 days since i last ate anything and need some way of getting some food in, obviously for my own health, but i really don't want to end up being too weak to work either.

Is there any way i can get financial help? Just for the next couple of.weeks?

Thanks in advance.
Ps- payday loans not an option, and not apparently eligible for hardship allowance.

Where do you live? Have you any food banks locally?

I've been known to have a car boot sale when I've been short for cash for my bus fare to work ( but I am a horder, so I have always got some bits and bobs that I can get rid of).

The Old Style board is a good place to head if you can get a small amount of cash - they are great at meal planning on a very small budget.

    Boilerman,

My nearest food bank is in worcester- a 25 min train journey away. I live in Evesham. I don't have a car either, and i sold everything of value the last time i was in this position. It's a pretty desperate situation.
  • My local Tesco apparently donates fresh unsold food at end of day to the local homeless shelter. No idea if something like that would be worth looking into? Otherwsie perhaps call your local council for advice- they ought to be able to point you in the right direction.

Could you get a temporary overdraft from the bank? Have you checked n the bottom of all your handbags, down the back of the sofa, coat pockets, etc? If you could gather even just £10, value bread, value beans and the cheapest fruit would tide you over (obviously not a long term solution).
Speak to the local corner shops, and offer to do a few hours work for a few supplies?
Do you have nothing in your cupboards at all?

    I appreciate the replies guys.

I'll have to contact the local council but i am working all day tomorrow and they're not around on a weekend.

My bank account is just a cashcard account with nationwide and doesn't allow an overdraft. Credit score is through the floor as well so I'd never get one.

I gathered all my loose change about a month ago and got 6 quid. Doing the same now, i have less than 50p! :-(

All i have in my kitchen is my small basil plant and a couple of old spuds
  • Your local authority should be administering the replacement for crisis loans: each local authority does these differently now but if you're in Evesham you should contact 0845 607 2000 or email socialcare@worcestershire.gov.uk to see how it works in your area and get an application in to tide you over.

I just had a look into this. The list of people not eligible is endless. It's difficult to see who does benefit. These grants can't be used for day-to-day living expenses. Thank you for the suggestion though.

I asked a colleague if an advance on wages was possible, but then again, i don't really want my manager and other colleagues knowing my very private business.

It will be on a case by case basis so worth a shot. They can supply you with food vouchers if you meet the criteria, they do not give out money but will do vouchers. I work in the same office as my LA's social fund team and its worth a shot for you.

  • Some supermarkets knock end of date food down to pennies, so if you go in late you may be surprised what you can pick up. Even if it is a loaf of bread for 10p and a value jar of jam or lemon curd, it is something to keep you going for a couple of days whilst you find some other help. Supplement with free food such as blackberries and maybe windfall apples.
  • Ask your local minister at your local church? They wouldn't let you starve - maybe offer to refund once paid?
