OMG, you and your girlfriend must have been so stressed, what a disaster. As a single parent (and a skint one at that), if I had won that, taken my son, and been faced with the same problem I would have had NO means of paying the charge they demanded.. crikey I would still be there!!!! The whole situation definitely merits some kind of apology/compensation.0

PS... as per my previous post, an apology/compensation was definitely called for, if it were me.. I would take the £600 and have a nice cheap last minute holiday next year with it.. hopefully a stress-free one0

Hi all :-)
Well I am finally back at my computer! We spent some time with my girlfriends family in London before we came back to good ole' Cumbria.
Thanks for all your support whilst I was going through all of this :-))
Just to recap;
I got all my expenses back for the seaplane, credit card fee's and train journey, from Montauk to Penn Station.
I agreed to the £600 compensation they offered me but there was a slight mess up with that. Which went in my favour. Basically the seaplane company eventually took payment from them and reimbursed my credit card. They did this AFTER I had already got payment for this from The Black Tomato. So I ended up with £700 compensation. They told me just to keep it as I don't think it would have looked great asking for £100 back.
I also took delivery of a bottle of Taittinger Champagne with 2 glasses this morning from The Black Tomato. Which was really nice of them to send.
Overall I am VERY impressed with the way they have dealt with all of this. And they really have went out of their way to make up for the mistake. They have been so efficient and apologetic about the entire situation and never once tried to brush me off.
Right, now I have to find a way to catch up with the 173 pages of competitions that I have missed out on! I wonder if there are many holiday one's to do.....LolMSE Comping Since August 20110 -
LOL - hope you do win another hol, and that this time it lives up to what it promises.
I am also impressed with how they've dealt with this. I've always said that I don't judge a company by the mistakes they make, but by how they deal with those mistakes.
I also applaud your attitude throughout, and thank you for keeping us up to speed. I know it's not just me who is generally interested in how this turned out.
Enjoy your champagne - for which I am truly jealous
Blu XI am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apology
THIS IS ME!
When you talk down to others it says more about you than them.0 -
Its good to see all angles of wins - although it was not a good experience its great that they made up for it. Hope you win another holiday soon and it all goes to plan.

Oh no, what a huge shame that what should have been a trip of a lifetime turned into such a horrible experience:(
I am so sorry to hear what happened - I do hope you get at the very least an apology or better still some sort of compensation from them.

If the £600 is pure compensation so in addition to the seaplane fare and creditcard charges -which I think you said it is ...........I think I'd feel that anything between £300 and £500 pp to make up for a ruined trip is more than fair -so they have offered the lower end of what I'd feel was fair and I personally might be tempted to try and get them to push it up a bit. This is with a bakground of a long time comper and an ex travel agent who still travels to the US fairly often. In your shoes I'd get in touch with Edwin Mutton (lovely man btw) and ask his advice-he might even negociate for you-you never know !
However I do feel the seaplane people behaved very badly and once all this was settled I'd be posting a review of their behaviour on tripadvisor.
EDIT Ooops I see it is all resolved -well done ! Just the tripadviser review to do thenI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

The hotel I was staying in, the Encore, was either $150 per night blocked off credit card (and then released) or $300 per day cash which they would have stored and then returned and there was no way I would have had the cash ($1800 ) I might be $50 off or so it was a few years back.
I'd check the hotel and/or the terms and conditions. It might be completely different if you win a comp with the hotel. If it's not in the terms that you need a credit card you can just tell the competition provider that you don't have one and they need to sort it out...as it's not your fault and your abiding the t&csThank you all so much, you guys have been amazing throughout all of this :–) I can honestly say this entire situation would have been worse without all your advice, support and kind words. I sent an email accepting the offer last night, so that should end this nightmare somewhat.
As for the credit card issue above, I do believe you can use the "pay as you go" style credit cards in hotels and the such. Obviously you have to make sure that money is on the card and you won't have access to the money that is held until maybe a couple of days after checkout, but it's an option. Along with our normal credit card, we took one of those Thomas Cook Cash Passport cards. Mastercard / Visa operated, the exchange rate is pretty decent from them and there is no fee for using abroad, unless you get money from an ATM. There are other places that do similar cards. I think the Post Office do one too.

Black Tomato were the management company that organised the trip when we went to New York last year. When issues with my ex's knee surgery arose they swapped part of the prize so she wasn't left out, (stunt school to helicopter tour).
Im really glad that they sorted it, did good and compensated you. Hopefully in months/years you will remember the good over the bad and the great experiences you had in NY.Insert smart witty comment here0
