Not really. A lot of software houses offer discounts for the first year and then have increased/normal rates for year 2+

Would not put sales off as you already have the software used for year 1 and most likely have saved work through this, so will be obliged to take second year out otherwise you wont have access to saved work.

If the cost is too much then Libre Office or Open Office will avoid the need for renewal and still give access to the original files.

Don't blame OP for being cross that she was missold.

The pond life that did it was no doubt on commission and would have got more if he had sold you a poor paid for anti virus package as well. The truth is that you can't trust shops like this unless you know exactly what you are doing and if you do you probably would not go there other than to view.

These stores prey on the non techs, hoping that whatever the sales KID says you will nod your head and agree. This is why i never visit these stores even to browse

Can I suggest you take the issue up with a manager at Curry's?

Explain to him that one of his staff told you that your existing software (Office 2010) was incompatible with Windows 8, which is nonsense, and that you were mis-sold Office 2013 as a result, when your existing package will work fine.

Any decent PC sales person would know from experience that MS would never release an OS that did not support such a recent version of their flagship office productivity package, so to even suggest this is ludicrous. MS is still supporting XP SP3 until next year, which was first released in 2002 - that's 12 years of support!

If they still refuse to be reasonable, simply threaten to sue Curry's via Money Claim Online within seven days without further reference to them for the full cost of the laptop and all software sold to you.

If they don't respond favourably, go ahead and submit the claim (including the court fee) a week later and I guarantee you they'll be on the phone to you with a refund offered as soon as the paperwork hits their head office lawyer's desk.

From the official MS tech site:

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/office_resource_kit/archive/2012/11/12/which-versions-of-office-are-supported-on-windows-8-and-on-surface-with-windows-rt.aspx

"Which versions of Office are supported on Windows 8 and on Surface with Windows RT?

    Windows 8

With the recent launch of Windows 8, you might be asking "Which versions of Office can I deploy to Windows 8 computers?" Well, the following versions of Office are supported on Windows 8 (and on Windows Server 2012, too):
    • Office 2013
    • Office 2010
    • Office 2007"
Office 2003 is not directly supported (i.e. the program itself may not run properly on Windows 8), but you can certainly use Office 2007 and Office 2010 to read .doc files created in Office 2003 files and re-save these to the .docx Office 2007/10 file format.
