Curry's mis-sold me Microsoft Office 2013

I bought a laptop from Curry's/PCWorld with Windows 8 and the salesman told me I couldn't use my Office 2010 but I had to have MS Office 2013.
But it won't open my word files so I over wrote the software with 2010 and it works just fine.
The technical support line couldn't understand why I was told I needed 2013; apparently Windows 8 supports all previous Offices.
I went back to the store who said that because I have downloaded it they cannot issue a refund. Microsoft says they can, but they are still refusing.
I have gone to Citizens Advice who reported the matter to Essex Trading Standards who have referred me back to CAB.
I've written 3 emails now telling Curry's I'm not happy being mis-sold something, but they are refusing to budge.
I want my money back!

Office 2010 and 2007 should be no problem though.
I wonder if the Currys person has mixed up 2003 and 2010.0 -
I also use office 2003 with Windows 8 Pro and have no issues0

office 2013 works with windows 8. well the wifes does. mind you windows 8 is a pile of poo.0

I had files created using MS Office 2010, but when I tried to open them by right clicking and choosing 'open', I was informed I did not have the software installed to open them.
'File' > 'open' showed no documents available when I tried to access them through 2013.
I can't use it, I didn't want it, ask for it and as it turned out I did not need it, but they still won't give me a refund.0 -
I think there are two issues here:
a) a techie issue of why Office 2013 didn't work for you with Windows 8.
Office 2013 and Windows 8 were released at around the same time so would normally work together. I'm sure there are ways around whatever problem you had, and ideas which techie folk on this particular Forum Board could come up with, if you didn't have Office 2010 already.
b) a non-techie, consumer rights issue of Currys telling you that Office 2010 didn't work with Windows 8, and selling you Office 2013, when you didn't need it.
I think this is your main issue, and it's possible that other boards on here have experts who'd know how to take it further. However if you've already talked to CAB and Trading Standards I imagine you've already had pretty good advice.
Incidentally which version of Office 2013 did you buy? Was it the version which gives you a year's use on 5 PCs (which might be called Office 365), or the more expensive version which gives you perpetual use on one PC?0 -

I don't think they will have mixed them up. From what I have in Currys and PC World if you buy a computer they start the hard sell of Office and Anti-virus. I was looking and was told that I would have to buy office as it is essential you are given a discount if you buy with a computer, that won't be available later. I have seen people pushed into buying office when they could likely just use something like Libre 0ffice. I hate to see people being ripped of like this.0 -
Something else which occurred to me... how did you buy Office 2010?
Was it installed on your previous computer, or did you buy it separately?0 -

You need to understand what MS say carefully.
What they have said is not that it won't work but that is not supported. (office 2003 on win8)
What is means is that it may continue to work but at some time in the future MS may do an update to Win8, the consequences of which are that Office 2003 no longer works. At this point as it is no longer supported MS have no obligation to modify the win8 update or indeed do an update for office 2003 to make it work again.
Later office programs are support on Win 8 so yes MS will continue to ensure that win 8 updates do not break later office applications.0 -
I would never ever go back to Currys/PCWorld after the awful experience I had a year ago going with my Grandad to get him a laptop. We got an awful aggressive sales person who just would not accept that we didn't want/need the software she was trying to bundle us with for a ridiculous extra cost. Kept going on and on, not listening to a word we were saying. Along the lines of 'look we just want to pay for THAT laptop with THIS card and then go'. But she wasn't having any of it.
Got to point where Grandad lost his cool and stormed out of the shop.
I'd never go to such a place to buy electronics or appliances. Would always just research and order online. I usually get custom laptops for much cheaper than buying one from a store as you can choose what features you want/need. Unfortunately Grandad doesn't like the internet so that wasn't an option...he might reconsider it after that experience.Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)

That's pretty close to saying "it won't work" in my book.0
