new user names.....

I'm lying in the sun, read my book and so turned to this forum to read a few pages (hhmmmm maybe I should just pour another Pimms) :rotfl:

Anyway, I started to wonder why people post certain new threads under a new user name, is it so just the question with the given facts is answered, or to disassociate with all the other posts someone writes?

I don't posting all mine under my (this) username, then if someone wants to look up if I've asked before or anything else they can.

Just wondering if it was for any other reason, as a lot of the threads then go on to the replies asking for more info.

Back to my drink now.

I 'think' that sometimes it's because the RL people they are talking about or people in RL in general know their usual username and they don't want to be recognised.

Although I do have to laugh at the people who do that then give you so much information that it's obvious who they are. :rotfl:

I think sometimes its because people have such a 'persona' on here that they think they wouldn't get impartial advice on just the situation.

Background information is usually very very relevant though. Look at the recent thread by 'pyjamadays' or whatever her name was. She'd had all her previous threads deleted but they contained very relevant info and it was impossible to give decent advice/opinions without that info.

Also a lot of couples seem to use mse and often a poster won't want any friends or family that use the site to see their posts.

Because I've seen some MSE users take one thing an OP said in the past and using it venomously against them, despite not having enough relevant facts to really make such harsh judgements.

I guess the thing is, friends and family who know their username might click on a thread started by that username....but they are much less likely to click on another "I need advice" thread from a a generic random username. If they did, yes, they probably would still recognise their friend - but the point is they are much less likely to read it in the first place if it is a new name.

I have never posted anything with a new name but I wouldn't rule it out. I don't think friends and family specifically know my username on here (apart from my husband) but from all my posts it is probably very obvious who I am if anyone who knew me read them. Therefore, if I had a sensitive/embarrassing/personal question, I might post it under a new name, because someone who knew me in real life might read it and think it could be me.....but if there is no other posting history for them to trawl through they are less likely to be able to confirm that suspicion!

Yes, sadly ive seen this too.

I stopped using mse for a number of months after one person in particular started making fun of the fact my baby died and calling me a liar. I reported their posts but they are still a prolific poster so it seems no action was taken, although I am glad to see that there are a number of users who were regularly abusive or harsh in general have been PPRed.

Also, if someone is going to post something rather controversial knowing it will end up in a bun fight, they may post under a different username in order to protect their usual one from repercussions.

I remember one regular poster who posted she'd done something awful, it's still thrown back in her face occasionally years after. I bet she wishes she'd made an AE.

Yes I've seen this too. They often use a new username to try and keep the thread on topic and not have to people rake through their past:eek:
