View pc on tv via home wifi - how?

We have a home network - 3 pcs in upstairs office using Virgin Media broadband (60mb). The PCs are cabled into the router and we also have 2 laptops (running win 7). We use the laptops mainly downstairs where they work fine on wifi, no probs accessing the home network.

We should like to watch some stuff running on the laptops through the downstairs tv. Can we do this via wifi? If so is there an idiots guide on the web on how to set it up?

Answer above makes absolutely no sense.

Connect laptop to TV using HDMI if available.

You made need to get/build a home media server which would allow you to wirelessly access items on a shared folder.

According to Intel you need Intel WiDi:

I'm sure you can do it with other technology though. Perhaps a Raspberry Pi could be permanently connected to the TV via HDMI, and then have the Pi remote-desktop into the PC or laptop so it displays the desktop on the TV?

That being said, if you only want to view the laptops it may be simpler to just connect them to the TV with a HDMI or VGA cable.

Exactly , I know it's a "42in Sony with all the usual addons" https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4750121 but Sony have made a lot of TVs so more accurate details would help.

If you want to see what is going on on the laptop screen on the tv screen, then you need a very high bandwidth connection - i.e. HDMI. You can't transport the required bandwidth over Wifi to get a live uncompressed image displayed on the screen.
If it's just watching media etc held elsewhere, then a media extender or even a PS3 or Xbox can do a very good job of it, and acts as a blu ray player too (PS3 at least).
that way the media extended reads the file remotely, and decodes it locally for display on the TV.

Don't know what equipment you have used for it not to work, but you can do it.

Which version of Windows are you running? If it's 7 or 8, then you should be able to "Play To" another Windows 7 or 8 PC without extra hardware and maybe even your TV if it's DLNA-compatible and has WiFi.

Edit: However that's just using Media Player; maybe that won't work with your Virgin Media stuff.

    This is all you need.
Stick one end into the TV and the other into the laptop.
What you see on the laptop you now see on the TV.
