  • Everybody seems to come up with good ideas, but does the TV have HDMI ports (it is probably a CRT of unknown vintage) plus the OP asked for Wi-Fi , which I doubt it will have. Plus do we know if the laptops have HDMI

What makes you think it is a CRT?

OK had a look at the tv which is an older Sony Triniton and it does not have HDMI but 3 scart connectors at rear and an S video inut through a 4 pin DIN connector. Laptops do have hdmi connectors and run win 7.

So let us say I need a new basic tv with HDMi, that is one option. I was however rather hoping that I could establish a connection using our wifi network which works well on the laptops when in the front room where the tv is.

I think I was not clear enough about what we want to stream,

OH has a subscription to US live streamed baseball matches. (These games are not available on any of the UK catchup tv channels only from his pc as streamed video.) Currently he streams these games on his pc in real time. He would like to watch them sitting on the sofa, on a large tv screen. But our sofa is some distance from the tv, we have a large front room, and he rather hoped he would not have to cable up each time. ( Also would need a long HDMI cable to connect laptop on sofa to tv on wall opposite. Would this impact the signal?)

I on the other hand am very keen on extreme weather and like to watch this live on the US weather channel via my PC. I also have a sub to a US live weather streaming channel and want to sit and watch this, via my pc, on the tv with a nice large screen. I also want to watch Youtube vids on the tv screen as well.

Was rather hoping could do it via our wifi home network.

Where is the PC relative to the sofa and TV?

One option might be to put the PC next to the TV and use a wireless keyboard and mouse to control it from the sofa.

Cos she said so in the link I posted earlier, and she has confirmed it here now.

    Many thanks

    Didn't see that my apologies.

What output does the laptop have?

HDMI is digital - SCART - analogue.

    Could cause some complications

I'm guessing a new TV is in the OPs mind. Otherwise she could try an HDMI/SCART adapter (and have a remote controlled laptop colocated with the old TV as suggested above).

A new DLNA TV opens up the possibilities though.

Yes I am thinking of getting a new HD tv, probably a Samsung, with a couple of HDMI ports. Don't need a smart tv as I have a fully range of Virgin services via the V+ HD box. (Can anyone recommend a basic Samsung HD tv which is easily wall mounted BTW).

What is maximum range of HDMI cable to connect tv and pc? What is your mobile mouse app, sounds good. Is it an android phone? Have Samsung Galaxy S3.

Not sure about your tv although i used to have a samsung 51" plasma that was easily wall mounted. I have my second tv running the laptop from a 10metre hdmi cable only a cheap 1 off ebay too and its perfect just as good as my main tv running off a 3metre cable. would say the maximum range to be the maximum hdmi length you can get? 15/20metres maybe?

The mobile mouse app is on my apple iphone 4s. if you google mobile mouse you will be able to find out if its available for android and also download the mobile mouse program needed for your laptop.

    Hope you get it sorted.
