One of mine is old so she is in the house 99% of the time anyway.

The other does whatever he wants. He's rarely in the house during summer, although today he did grace us with his presence on the bed for an hour or so.

If the go out of the back via the flap the will shoot in at the 1st drop of rain. If they go out of the front then I often get backs turned or them running away. Sometimes one will come in and not the other so I end up trying to get the "stray" in without letting the other out, its fun when it is raining or you are in a hurry (not!)
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

One of mine will sit on the front window sill but as soon as we go to let him in, he runs off. Then he's back there 5 minutes later. I think he's hoping when I open the door one of the other cats will run out to play with him.

Ours has a cat flap but frequently she wants to be let out the front door (which I do) and then she bangs the cat flap when she wants to come in - so I go and open the door for her.... Luckily she does not venture far from home and the rattle of the biscuit tin usually gets her in without any trouble at all.

Mine will meow at the window wanting to come in. I open the door and call him but he doesn't move. I close the door and sit down (he always waits for me to sit down!) then meows again. I try again and he will sneak in just as I've had enough and am closing the door. He's a pain!
  • I can't vote, as there is no "Cat does not get let in, unless has been tapping at the window in the pouring rain for at least a few minutes"

We never call her in. If she wants to stay out, then she can stay out.

Our two are both different but in general when the first person gets up here in the morning both are at their side within seconds. Occasionally it changes though, for example this morning, No2 (strange name I know) was out and didn't come in for at least 30 minutes after food was made ready and that was despite a saucer being clinked and a bag of treats being rustled.

You can never be 100% sure with cats.

I thought it was only my little madam who did this. Good to know its most cats. We can't have a cat flap due to glass sliding doors and also prefer not to because my mum likes to have the cat in at night or she can't sleep. Plus the dog would probs try fit her porky self into it and get her big tummy stomach as she same size as cat.

People saying let them out hungry and they come back when you shout dinner, well ours is a crafty little thing. She miows like crazy for food and will pester you until you fill her food bowl with wet food and she sits there waiting for you to fill it up and as soon as you do guess what? she runs off outside. Its like she wants to make sure there is food for her to come in and go back out when she wants.

It drives me and my mum insane there has been rows over it and everything. We try let the cat out during the day and keep her in at night. But she loves going out a night and is desperate to get out. Cats are ninjas especially when letting the dog out for last toilet time at say 10pm.

Once she out when its dark thats it your not getting her back for hours. If you try call or look like you want her in it will make her more determined to stay out. Just gotta act like your not bothered and then when she comes in casually walk to the backdoor and then close it as fast as possible. Many a times i've not been quick enough and she has ran back out waited on the decking for me to try grab her and then jumped over the fence and sat in the neighbours garden peering up at me. Nothing will make her come in treats or food or anything. Bloody !!!!!!s they are.

We have a porch and a small sloping roof that is connected to the kitchen extension roof. Yesterday my mum came home to find her onto of the porch roof and crying to get down.

Whats also annoying is in the winter when its raining or snowing my cat wants the back kitchen door open but won't go out just sit there staring outside whilst we all freeze out bums off.

RachRuby you're experiencing what all of us do. We let ours come and go as they please and the upshot is that they really don't go out much at night. We can't seem to train No2 cat to use the catflap though so a window needs to be left open all the time, in all weathers, to let her come and go. Mind you, in the worst weather we batten down tight and the cleaver wee moggies curl up near a radiator or in front of the fire. They're not as daft as we think.

Our two are allowed to feed 24/7 but morning wet food brings them both running as if they hadn't seen a bite. The younger one still responds to the rattling of a bag of Dreamies but we can see that starting to fail. The older one does what she wants, when she wants.

The old "let's get on the roof" ploy still happens here. No2 is doing it and as with her older sister (and as you say) comes to the edge of the roof and cries to come down. When you lift her down though, as with the older one, she cries as if you are killing her, drives her claws into you and when out down walks away making noises of disgust.

You can't win with cats eh?
