We are with Sky and have been for 6 years( no current contract).
Yesterday my partner recieved a call from a sky rep asking him he he wanted Sky+ subscription for free. He told him that it would be free for 12 months then £5 after that year. My partner asked if it was free to be told yes. He agreed.
I have rung them today to cancel as he is currently off work on SSP and we cant afford it. To be told by sky that its a 12 mth contract that we are tied into.(which my partner knew nothing about)
The Interesting bit is that yesterday he started new meds for his bipolar and was very out of it and wasn't of sound mind when he agreed to it. Do we have a leg to stand on to cancel or at least out of this contract?
He doesn't recall if the sky rep mentioned the contract or if he asked if it was a contract. Not even 24 hours has passed since this verbal agreement and I'm trying to sort it out.
This has put my partner in distress due misunderstanding and ill health.
I am really angry about it myself as if hes been taken advantage off.
Any advice?

Sky+ subscription is free, but I didn't want another contract as I wanted to do the MSE thing and haggle the price down as SSP doesnt go far.0

were you planning to take out the contract in the next 12 months?
if not then use the free 12 months
If you are then its time to lodge an official complaint
also. does your partner have a password for sky?
As in are they officially able to amend the account?0 -
thanks for your reply, no we were not planning to take out a contract as I knew we wouldn't be able to haggle on price. Yes he has a password but unsure of what you mean about - As in are they officially able to amend the account?
If he gave his password does that mean they had a right to add us to a contract? (even though he was out of it?)0 -

yes,if he has a password then he can officially change the package
that was my thinking with regards to a get out
If you are unsure whether they mentioned a contract, they may well have done and are bang to rights on the new package
however theres no harm in complaining if you wish
or keep the 12 month Sky+ (if its of use) and plan to cancel on the 12 month to haggle0 -
thanks custardy0

Sky do NOT charge for Sky +. ( Unless you cancel your entertainment subscription, in which case its £10 ish a month)
Someone is telling porkies.
Do you mean they are supplying a new Sky + box, what box do you have atm?
PS There is no such thing as being out of contract, after the initial 12 months you are on a 30 day rolling contract. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
no new sky + box, we already have one.
About the 30 day rolling contract, thats when I tried to cancel my package today they said we were now in a contract for 12 months as of yesterday so I couldnt cancel or haggle without charges etc.
we now seem to have hd channels (never had them before)? but no hd package appears on our account?0 -
looking at online bill for next month basic hd added!!! he never agreed to this as we had a problem with them before with hd and trying to get out of it then (we both said we would never go there again with hd)
what options can we take to get out of this contract if any, because we would have never knowingly agreed to any of this.
Thanks for all help so far0 -
It would appear to be none - unless you can prove what was said, and as you were not a party to this, that's a non starter.
It would be naive to think that Sky would provide anything 'for free' without getting something in return. What further weakens your case is that you make no mention of Sky confirming your commitment (which they do by letter) to head off such claims of mis-selling.
Your best plan is to cancel all add-ons to get to the basic package (at minimum cost) then dump the package at the earliest opportunity at month 11 by giving 4 weeks notice. Become the primary contact so that another call does not cause a repeat on the minimum term extension.0
