rabbit in the bin store

You might as well be with some of the people on these forums!
Its the fact that I seem to be in the wrong. Oh and as well as working full time, caring for my OH and my two boisterous dogs I should educate someone in rabbit care and the fact im not and im unhappy that a living creature is kept like that if I left it and let it die of thirst or the foxes get it the same people slating me would slate me for that.0 -
To be honest I would think a bin store prone to flies is a death sentence for a rabbit,as they are specifically prone to fly strike.
It is an awful slow death for the animal as flies lay their eggs on the back end of the rabbit and the larve ie maggots then eat the rabbit and burrow into it.
Please make the person looking after the rabbit aware of this, because if the rabbit is not having a clean hutch every other day in this weather, the flies will be in there.
It is a horrible and really common problem
My vet says they get tonnes of rabbits with this in the summer and they are very hard to sort out.0 -

That's the annoying thing. Suddenly it's your fault after trying to show a bit of compassion to a living creature, because you are unable to take it into your house due to having two Jack Russells...!!!0 -

But why would she want to take it into her house? It belongs to somebody else and is being cared for by someone else. The OP has already stated it has regular supplies of food & water from SOMEONE ELSE!
If she truly has concerns about the welfare of the rabbit then she should have spoken to the person who is caring for it, or at least left them a note to contact her. There are some that would say she's sticking her nose into other people's business and acting without authority.
Ok, it's not an ideal situation, although none of us can judge without seeing for ourselves and we don't know what the alternatives might be. But this is a short term arrangement for 7-10 days, and not the permanent residence of the rabbit. Perhaps if the OP was to post a photograph then we could advise if the rabbit is truly in need of intervention.
Some have pointed out fly strike. Yes, this would be a concern for me too and is another reason the OP should perhaps leave a note to make the carer aware of the risks by keeping the rabbit so close to bins where there's likely to be a higher population of flies. Has the cage been cleaned out and had fresh bedding replaced during the past week?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

They will give you proper advice and support; and it is unlikely that they will just use this as an opportunity to find fault.
They will likely keep in touch until the situation is resolved - reassuring for you.
Kudos to you for caring.0 -
Thanks sadbunny have joined. I movrd it today to a cooler fly free area as they've ignored my notes for the last week and the amount of flies was concerning0

I think Zacsmum was agreeing with the OP that she is getting blamed.
I would write them a note about the fly issue, it could be that they are unaware but trying to keep it safe away from the dogs and foxes. Personally if there is a fence between the rabbit and your dogs, meaning they can't get to the rabbit, I would let the dogs out. Our old rabbits would go nose to nose with our dog, if visitors had dogs they would warn them off with a big thump.
Hopefully the owner will be back soon and the cage they are in is just a travel cage. It could be that their usual home is too big to be moved.
Eta - just seen your post above that you have moved it, well done :-)0 -

I believe this is the first time you've mentioned leaving any notes in your posts.
You seem to be a bit 'off' with some posters - you're obviously unhappy about this situation (for the inconvenience of your dogs' routine as well as for the welfare of the rabbit).
If the tone of the notes you've left is anything similar, maybe that's why they've been ignored.0 -

I have left 3 in total. I am now off yes with posters as if you had read the thread you will see that it is being portrayed as my fault someone is cruel enough to leave a rabbit in an unhealthy environment.
Again if you had read the thread you would see that we are coping with the lack of outside off lead playtime.
And guess what before I got my dogs I cleared it with the HA and the neighbours (though there are only two of those left) because thats what you do when its shared space:rotfl:
Thank you for your contribution

I have read the thread. That is why I know you have been 'off' with some posters.
I didn't read it that some posters have portrayed it as your fault someone is cruel enough to leave a rabbit in an unhealthy environment.mellymoo74 wrote: »Again if you had read the thread you would see that we are coping with the lack of outside off lead playtime.
Where did I say you weren't coping with the lack of outside off lead playtime?
I said you were unhappy with the situation re your dogs, not 'not coping'.mellymoo74 wrote: »And guess what before I got my dogs I cleared it with the HA and the neighbours (though there are only two of those left) because thats what you do when its shared space:rotfl:
If the HA say it's OK, maybe the rabbit's owner didn't think it was necessary to get OK from the neighbours. :rotfl::rotfl:mellymoo74 wrote: »Thank you for your contribution
