I don't like those ancient phones, you know, they are just highly inefficient. Anyways, the conditions you listed are just not attractive.

In terms of being a phone and the length of battery life, they are much more "efficient" than many smart phones on the market.
  • I will suggest you to buy HTC desire or HTC sensation. Both series are good and working fine with a lot more features and don't wait for iphone6.

    A bit OTT surely?

I have many direct debits / standing orders, such as Virgin Media, Insurance, Utilities. Most of these are on a minimum term contract, like a mobile phone.
Yes, I know there are certain obligations and responsibilities with keeping these in check, but that's called being an adult and life.

And I did get a "good deal" on my contract mobile phone.

It costs me £16.90 a month for a Nexus 4 handset with 600 minutes, 1 gb data and unlimited texts.

The handset costs £279, so that works out £5.28 a month for my line rental. Don't think you'd find that on PAYG?

Also, by having mobile contracts since I was 18, I have actually boosted my credit rating making it EASIER to achieve credit in the future.

Buying your own handset and a PAYG SIM may be right for you, but that doesn't mean it's right for everyone, myself included.

    How long is your contract?
I can't quite understand those figures.

I used to be a contract person but now I prefer to have SIM only (not PAYG) deals and buy the phone of my choice.

    £16.90-£279/24=£5.28

As simple as that. £279 is the price of a sim-free phone.

    24 months x £16.90 = £405.60

    - £279 (price of handset) = £126.60 / 24 months

    = £5.275, rounded up to £5.28p

    £16.90×24=£405.60 - £279 handset cost = £126.60 / 24 = £5.28 for service.
The handset cost is the price that Google retails at.
    A very good deal IMO

    Thanks for clarifying that.

Good price but I prefer the flexibility of not being tied into a two year contract.
Although I just did the sums and if I keep my phone for two years my total outlay will be £15 more than your total £405. So I am happy with my deal too.

As you said, horses for courses.

What suits some may not suit others.

I was just disagreeing with the poster that said you are always best to go with buying a handset outright with a PAYG sim, and that "contracts are never a good deal".

This is why I posted my original question! Hubby and I got PAYG and I don't think we have saved much money. Not to mention that we got crap phone set to begin with. I don't have the money to buy a decent Iphone/smarphone (not the latest, just something decent) right out so I thought a contract might work better. As I said hubby is on the work for half of the week and I help with his work from home -which is why we are on the phone so much. Reading all these posts I am getting many ideas and also the gist that there are no perfect deals out there.

Has anyone here gone for a deal as the one I posted in the beginning?

If you don't have any money saved to buy it, then you simply cannot afford it.
And you don't need anything 'decent', let alone iPhone5, to keep in touch with your husband. I am under impression that you are trying to use this excuse for justifying buying an expensive toy that you don't need really.

Also, as it was already mentioned above, all smartphones need charging every day (if not even more often - depending on the usage). They are good for many things, but just for phone calls and texts you don't need a smartphone.
