Difficult and upsetting - feel for you both. If it is a no options done deal, then there are some huge advantages. Socially, stress-wise, quantity of available cooked food. If there is any room for negotiation/drop out lists, keep in regular touch with the uni.
What is your DS daily/weekly food budget? £5 to £6 per day, or less? Work out the net cost differential, and view this lower figure vs the advantages and it may not seem quite so bad.
Sorry, have v limited internet access. Hugs to you and very best wishes to your ds for his time at uni xx
Aww, thank you RootedNomad
Yes, been pointing out the pros to him, no trekking off for shopping, no paying higher price for on campus groceries, no meal planning, no washing up (bit of a backward step on the route to independance, but that can be tackled again in year 2!)
More time for study & social life
Budget wise, he was aiming for £3 per day in the first term, and then as he got more practised, to try and reduce that.
Will work around it, if he really can't be given self catered. The mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work unless it's open0 -
Just burst out laughing at this old post

Good morning, just having a little catch up on the last thread,
I was there too madmuppet if I'd have known I would have waved:wave:
It was fantastic, we went both days ... We stood in the rain on Thursday and got a great sun tan on Friday.
The Vulcan was awesome and the red arrows were amazing. :T
I didn't know that the Vulcan lives near us.. In a secret location in the South Yorkshire area.

Thanks Kerri gt.
It was his first choice uni, so can't see all accommodation would already have been allocated, as they don't process insurance/clearing until 11th September.
It may be we have to think of private accommodation, but as Keele is a campus uni, it would mean he'd also have to bus in from a nearby town. An hour of travelling per day, and the bus fares. So would ideally not like to do make him do this, this year.
Roll on 10am, and I can try ringing them
I live reasonably close to Keele and If you do have to look at private accommodation then I would probably recommend looking in Stoke preferably Newcastle. As there are good bus routes to Keele and accommodation would be cheaper than Baldwins Gate or loggerheads (2 nearest villages) It still would be easier for him to be on campus so hopefully you will be able to get it sorted. I'm trying to convince my DD that Keele would be a good choice when she goes, so she can commute and save accommodation costs. She's only just going into year 11, so a few years to convince her.:):)0 -

Morning all.
Bit floored today, DS2 has been allocated catered accommodation at uni, despite putting all 3 choices as self catered, and letter says, if we decline that, no further accommodation offer will be made.
The cost is phenomonal, and I can't find any indication of menu plans, and have searched and searched. Plus, already been accumulating self catering items, and of course, food stash for him.
Trying to remain very positive for him, pointing out all the pro's, but really worried about the cost
Anyone who's been through/has someone at Keele, that could offer any advice please?
someone suggested living off of campus. Might be a good idea. We went to visit someone who stayed there for a while but he got homesick. Newcastle is a smallish town but its ok. There are buses and maybe could save money and drive in the future.grocery challenge 9.86/600
