Hi all

I did my shop online last night and brought quite a few value range items including

2 x toothbrushes 18p

Value shampoo 40p 1ltr - tried this last night seems ok, my hair is greasy and i have heard that this is a bit drying so may be good for me, smells nice too

Value rim blocks 20p each - i have three toilets and it was costing me a fortune in these, they smell really nice and strong

Value oats 75p 1kg, no brainer brilliant

Penne pasta 500g 25p wow who knew pasta could cost this little!! ( i know you are prob more savvy than lol )

Pasta sauce 39p thought i would give this a go for quick dinners, or to add to a spag bol etc

Choc mouse 18p for 4! And dd loves them for a dessert

Value butter 89p

I know most of you prob know about all these but for me it has been a revelation! :D

39p would be better spent on ingredients to make your own

Yes i do make my own 9/10 but this is for occasional use
  • And if you're a working mom, don't forget, costing your time in to actually shop, prep and cook from scratch can actually make 'home made' cost more. I love reading about all the home made stuff that people on here make, but I'll be honest, it's a compromise for me. Some I make from scratch, some I'll happily buy.

    Well done you :)

I'm a fan of the value ranges - 22p for 6 x pitta breads!! BARGAIN!!

29p for jam - and it has no 'bits' which suits me :)

love finding a NEW values item that I like - it can be a bit hit & miss - but on the whole it defo helps keep the costs down

We take the value toothbrushes away on visits and bin them at the end - they don't last very long for regular use.

The rim blocks do last well, but the value cistern block can settle in the cistern - I stir mine from time to time (yes, an unusual pastime, but otherwise it just sits there). (edited as a bit went missing!)

The oats are brilliant - DH says they are as good as any others.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.
  • I agree with the above about having a few jars for those moments when life goes wrong and you could easily be tempted to dial up a takeaway. Far cheaper to have a jar to use.

That aside, homemade sauces are my favourite. Cheap, simple and delicious when we've got the time. I do try to keep a couple of boxes in the freezer but there's always those odd occasions...... ;)

Hi OP, you should feel good about being brave and trying these options :)

I also use the jars when pushed for time, the Vaule Curry sauce is a bit odd, but a pinch of curry powder improves it no end. I use it for a quick "leftovers balti" (whatever leftover cooked veg/meat/sandwich ham etc, plus rice, water, sauce, cook till rice is done)

I use mainly value and use loads of porridge it's just as good as any other brand imo.

As for the pasta sauce, I do make my own but i keep this in for if i'm in a hurry it's fab threw over some meatballs in the slowcooker then all i have to do at tea time is cook some value spaghetti (i'm not keen on the pasta i find it stodgy but the spaghetti is grand)
