It's not a Hoover (see my comment above)! ;)

Much though I agree with you hoover is widely accepted as a generic term for a vacuum cleaner.

Even more so when used as a verb.;)

I think you've left it a bit late to start putting the world right.

Hoover is a person's name. The Hoover dam was named after a president called Herbert Hoover but we don't call all dams Hoover!? For that matter, neither do we use dams to vacuum clean! :D

I don't think it's most of the world - the use of the term Hoover for meaning vacuum cleaner only seems to be widespread in the UK. As they say, it's never too late to make a change ;)

I doubt they can be found for less than £100

OP - for reference while Henry et al are praised widely by most, strangely in Which reviews they never feature as a best buy. Though they cant be beaten for their sturdy ness, they are not best at picking up all dust and hair from floors!

Who said the budget was £100?

Yes. My Miele was £130 and I paid £30 for 10 year parts and labour warrantee, for my VACUUM CLEANER ;)

You need a clutched machine for hard floors (i.e. one on which you can turn off the brush roll). Recon Dyson DC07 available for abour £100 will do the job nicely.

Why will I need to turn off the brush roll? I thought I needed one with a brush roll to do a proper job ?

The brush roll can damage solid wood/laminate floors. If there are any sharp stones/fragments in the brush roll, the spinning action will cause scratches in the flooring.

Use of the clutch deactivates the brush roll and on some machines also lifts it up slightly.

It has many uses. One of those on the link you provided.

A genericised trademark for any vacuum cleaner

Unfortunately I'll have to disagree on this one. It has after all been suggested that if Hoover were to contest its use as a generic name then a court would remove it.

It's unlikely that they would contest as it's free advertising for them!

The use of OXO cube by some to denote a stock cube is a similar example!
