The reason for not wanting to lose the parking is we think that would affect things when we come to sell.

Someone asked about what my husband thinks and its actually him that wants to go ahead with selling and renting and not me and I'm not even sure that them sharing is such a big deal but he does and dismisses all of my ideas. He seems to want perfect and I don't see how we can achieve it. I would like to go ahead with the extension but make the middle room bigger rather than make a forth and make much more room downstairs to include a room that could be a bedroom when we feel eldest is old enough to be in it.

I can't see parking at the back of the house being a selling point TBH, especially as you have room at the front to pave over for off street, which is far more attractive than parking around the back.

How about a single storey extension at the back, with a door to the garden to allay your fire fears, that can be used as a bedroom for the eldest and then be marketed as an office/den/tv room when you tell? That's a far better selling point that parking out the back TBH.

How often does your OH actually park in the garden anyway?

No way would I be letting him take away your family's security based on parking and an unrealistic desire for perfection.

  • you are fortunate that you have plenty of room at the rear of your property if you wished to extend. However, as you have said it would cause financial difficulty.

Our local council some years ago started a scheme whereby they added a room to homes that needed extra space for a disabled member of the family.

The extra room was of a prefabricated build which could be removed if needed in the future. It was heated and insulated and used as either bedroom/wet room.

Not sure if you could contact firms that make this type of structure to see if it would be a cheaper option.

None of this will be useful unless your husband is on board with the suggestions so far.

Is there a reason why being able to park at the back is an attractive option to have?

If you were viewing houses in your street now, which would appeal the most, your house extended, with an additional room that can be used as a bedroom if required or one less room but you are able to park at either front or back?

    Owning! Without a doubt.

I personally need the peace of mind that comes with the increased security owning your own home gives you.

I'm renting presently and feel as if I'm in limbo. I don't feel this is my home and I don't feel I can put down roots the same way I could with our own home.

I agree! Owning much better IF you can afford it. My brother has rents and have been moved 4 times in the past 18 months! It's not fair on a young family.

Why is it such a big deal?
