This would have made no difference whatsoever in this case, in fact you could argue that it would have worn out the clutch twice as fast. The art is dying out because it's pointless and unnecessary.

I have previously driven a car home with a snapped clutch cable by starting it in gear, matching engine speeds to change gear and stalling it to stop again. Do-able but not recommended.

Done this once as well to limp my old 106 to a garage so i could replace the clutch. Good "get you home" technique if you're stuck

    Just a small update;

Garage phoned this morning to say the clutch had gone and had leaked into the gear box so £612 to pay #kerching!

Really? The clutch which is made from solids had leaked into the gearbox! Any chance of a second opinion from somewhere else?

Basically the concentric slave cylinder has blown its seal and if that is the price to do the clutch, DMF and labour? That's not a bad price.
  • having just replaced clutch DMF and slave and master cylinder in my car i had a stuck down pedal after completing the clutch and DMF change, the clutch master cylinder had leaked and drained itself all over my drivers carpet.

there can only two places a non responsive clutch pedal can come from, master or slave if its not engaging gears seems you slave has leaked and emptied your clutch master cylinder, you have no obligation to change the clutch only the slave and have the master topped up with dot 3 fluid, and the clutch cleaned with clutch cleaner.

best practice, would be to change the clutch and slave (as its accessable), have the DMF tested for cracks, pitting and excess movement and have the box fluid changed and fill the hydraulic clutch master and bleed system through.

The mechanic didn't go into much detail tbh except to say he had to order the parts and it should be ready on Tuesday but the price includes everything inc VAT. I thought it would be closer to a grand so a small bit of luck. There goes my wages!

I just wish there'd been some kind of warning.

My DH phoned me in work to say he was looking at a beamer convertible - I said "can't you keep away from German cars?"

Hoping this will be end of the run of repairs for a while.

If that's a DMF, Clutch & Slave Cylinder then its good..

However, ring the local Halfords Auto Centre to get a price match, then take that back to the garage your car is at.. :) :j

PS - We have a 2.2 TDCI which is £920 for DMF, Clutch & Slave Cylinder, so this is cheap..

Don't bother ringing Halfrauds, You will be laughed at.

Ring your repairers to see if the DMF is being replaced within that price.

    If so, blinding price.

First 2 injectors failed and now this, I am proper sick of that car!

I know this isn't the problem you were asking about, but did you pay for the replacement injectors yourself? If so you may be due some money back as there has been a recall on some VW 2.0 TDi engines of that age where all four injectors were replaced for free. Customers who had previously paid out of their own pocket for replacement injectors were usually reimbursed. May be worth looking into.

thanks nick, I did pay a part % towards the first injector going so I will have to contact VW for a refund. I'd forgotten about that. I had to hire a car for a week as well at my expense.

The second time the injectors were replaced for free but it was a pita having to take DH to work at unsociable hours as the VW garage didn't have any courtesy cars available.
