HI Guys can anyone give me an idea of what has gone wrong and likely costs to repair my 2l diesel Passat (07 plate)

The pedal has just sunk to the floor and will not come back up and no gears can be selected.

Any ideas apart from crushing the blasted thing?

Thanks in advance.

The clutch cable could have snapped/come free, if so an easy road side repair for the RAC/AA. Good luck.

I'm sure that year of passats don't use a cable for the clutch, it's hydraulic.

Either there's a problem with the hydraulic mechanism or one of it's parts or the pressure plate on the clutch has died.
Neither is all that cheap a repair though.

Could well be the pedal mechanism itself. An easy fix if it is.

have you checked the hydraulic oil level ?
Then failing this examine the securing pin on the clutch pedal, they do snap and sink the pedal, new pins are £14 for the kit (plastic sheath and locking pin)
failing this look for leaks of hydraulic fluid and if not its the clutch that's collapsed.
    Be happy...;)

Have you tried pulling the clutch pedal up by hand, i had a VW Bora that the pedal used to stick down on, the bushes used to dry out, a good squirt of wd40 fixed it

Thanks for the replies ev1 :T

Waiting for the garage to go and pick it up and have a look at it.

The oil level is fine and no signs of a leak. The pedal can be pulled back up but just goes back to the floor again. Haven't looked to see if it's a broken pin as it's stuck in another village.

I'll wait to see what the garage say but I am expecting it to cost me :(. I wouldn't mind if there had been some kind of warning but it just went.

First 2 injectors failed and now this, I am proper sick of that car! I told DH not to get a VW after a bad experience I had with a Polo a few years ago, did he listen - no he didn't.

He'll be going back to a Ford at the first opportunity :j

What mileage is the car on, any issues selecting gear prior to this, any free revving, i.e when you put your foot down the revs go crazy high but the car does not pick up speed fast enough? slip!

I'd say pedal mechanism needs adjusting.

Pity you didn't know how to double de-clutch. Guess that is another art that is dying out. :(

Rapished - over 100k on the clock, no issues selecting gears and no free revving.

Will ask garage when they eventually phone me.....

Edit - slip! now last week when we were on holiday the car felt as though the wheels were spinning a bit like setting off on snow but the revs weren't crazy. It happened a couple of times but I wasn't driving just a passenger.

This would have made no difference whatsoever in this case, in fact you could argue that it would have worn out the clutch twice as fast. The art is dying out because it's pointless and unnecessary.

I have previously driven a car home with a snapped clutch cable by starting it in gear, matching engine speeds to change gear and stalling it to stop again. Do-able but not recommended.
