In case this is real - please confirm if they have offered a new phone plus the 50% off your first bill? However peed off you are, would be a quick way to sort it and move on. Sure, it's an annoying mistake, but surely you've made errors in life, work etc - there are worse things in the world - child poverty, terrorism, genital warts etc

If you go into an Apple store, or enter the serial number on Apples repair website, you should be able to find out when the warranty expires, and so find out how old the phone actually is...
What they offered me was 50% off on 1st month bill. If it was just another new contract, I would have accepted and consoled myself, "it happens".
But, in this case, it did not happen on just another day with me.
    My day was gutted.
We worked all day, reached home, went out for dinner at 1800 and back home at 1930 !! She was upset ever since I gave that s**t gift to her.

Have to say giving someone a 'gift' of a contract phone is a bit lame.

I did this for my wife - but I paid the full price and purchased it direct from Apple - which meant she could choose her own network too. No issues with Apple passing off a used handset accidentally or on purpose.
    I agree with you
    I should have done that
But there are not many Apple shops in North (Or may be I was too lazy to drive to Leeds/Manchester/Newcastle)
    Lessons learnt
    thanks

    Bless her

We bought a brand new Prius only 6 months ago. After its PREMIUM life (6 months), I have given it to her to drive to work everyday.

You're quite a catch! Maybe she thought you had taken the 6 months 'premium' use from the phone too....;)

Nothing says romance like a prius and an iphone 5.

She sounds like a spoilt brat, most people would be delighted with an iphone even if it's second hand.
Obviously it is wrong to pass off a used phone as new and Vodafone are responsible for that but crying about it? She needs to grow up and count her blessings.

No, she was not expecting anything expensive.

A Prius, and you let her drive it to work !!! Wow she must be thrilled every morning ;)
Top down, wind in her hair listening to the throaty exhaust all those admiring glances from the young bucks she must hardly be able to contain herself.

But, on 10th wedding anniversary, you wouldn't expect to get a used handset as a gift. I agree that crying was a bit too much, but, being upset, is not unusual. is it?
I bought it from vodafone shop at 14:00 and gave it to her at 1830 same day when we went out for dinner.
I'm surpised being as how you put so much forthought, effort and planning into it that the event went so pear shaped
