£4k family car, as you don't mention mileage I would be looking at a petrol Focus Zetec or Titanium or if you do many miles, the 1.8tdci.
I'd also consider an Astra (petrol) , Octavia or Leon.0 -
focus
you could get a 2006 model for that kind of money0 -
Genuninly touched by the useful responses, thank you very much! Will look into them all. Some times you have to hold back to go forward to where you want to be.

Unrelated note: just because you have 4K to spend does not mean you have to spend all of it. You sound like you're inexperienced with car buying - same as me when I bought my first car. Don't tell the dealer "my budget is £4,000". They'll work up their prices to £4K.
I had £2K to spend, I told the garage that and they tried to sell me a 2002 golf (1.6) for 2 grand.
I brought it down to 1800, but realistically I should have got it for £1700.0 -
What London Tiger says is very true....4 grand is a limit....not a target! Don't forget that.0

Yes, but it's a nice cut off point. £4k gets you a nice realtively low milage recent car.
£3k gets you more miles, an older car, or worse condition.
£4k wisely spend will get you more car than £3k wisely spent. That stands to reason.
If the OP is being given £4k to spend, I think it would be foolish to spend much less (though they can still haggle and get as much MOT, servicing, fresh tyres or wahtever thrown in).0 -
Get a Honda civic 2004/2005 facelift model. It's an upgrade from xxxx-2003 models. It's a family hatch back, very spacious inside, very reliable. You can get an executive model for your price and one with low mileage. I myself have a 1.6 civic. I recommend you go for 2l or 1.6 depending on your insurance price.
You can get top end for 4k, non executive versions come loaded upto 3k0
